CANYON, Texas – Midwestern State's
Ahmad Ihmeidan scored in the seventh minute of Saturday's NCAA Division II Midwest Regional championship at the West Texas A&M Soccer Field.
And the Mustangs put together a solid effort to come away with a 1-0 result over West Texas A&M to advance next weekend's NCAA Division II national quarterfinal.
"It was unbelievable to go there and beat them on their home field," MSU coach
Doug Elder said. "I was proud of the guys' effort."
Midwestern State (18-3) will play the winner of the West Region Semifinal between California State-Dominguez Hills (18-3-1) and Sonoma State (19-3-1) as the Toros and Seawolves square off Sunday at 3 p.m. (CST) in Carson, Calif.
If California State-Dominguez Hills wins, the Mustangs will travel to Carson to battle the Toros next weekend, but if Sonoma State wins, MSU will play host to the national quarterfinals for the first time since 2004.
Midwestern State took the wind in the first half and quickly worked for the lead as
Tyler Murphy took on defenders down the right wing and served a pass to Ihmeidan in the box for a one-timer.
"I thought we might need two goals for cushion because the win was playing such a factor," Elder said. "But Ahmad buried it with confidence to give us the lead."
West Texas A&M worked for a few good chances in the second half, but the Buffs were unable to convert as they were playing without starters Kenneth Christenson and Ben Everson.
The Mustangs limited the Buffs to four shots in each half and senior goalkeeper
Jeremy Turner made three saves to notch his fifth shutout of the season.
"We had a lot of really good chances and really dominated the first half," Elder said. "In the second half, they had the wind but we were able to hold them to one really good chance."
Midwestern State, which has now won six of its last seven matches, placed four players on the All-Midwest Region Tournament team including Ihmeidan, senior midfielder
Obed Becerra, and junior defenders
Robert Swann and
Brannon Calvert.
"I want to thank the fans that made the four-hour drive," Elder said. "They made a lot of noise and really made a difference. They picked our guys up."
