ABILENE, Texas - Midwestern State bounced back from a less than stellar start Saturday to claim a 3-1 win over Abilene Christian Saturday at Moody Coliseum.
Abilene Christian had its way with the Mustangs in the opening game committing a pair of errors with 17 kills to pull away for a 30-15 lead.
"We came out playing like we did against West Texas A&M and Central Oklahoma," MSU coach
Venera Flores-Stafford said.
That's when
Krissa Johnson provided some solid senior leadership to give the Mustangs the momentum to take over the match.
Johnson would end the match with 10 kills, but it was an inspired MSU defensive effort that limited ACU to a .100 hitting percentage the rest of the way to help the Mustangs claim wins of 30-25, 30-28 and 30-26 the rest of the way.
The Mustangs' front line combined for 12 total team blocks with
Alysha Pritt leading the way with six blocks.
Sesley Graves added five,
Allison Schreiber had four and Johnson had three.
Pritt completed her all-around game with a team-high 12 kills and added six digs.
Junior libero
Shay Velasquez paced MSU with 23 digs, while senior
Katie Guehler had 11.
The Mustangs, who improved to 27-4 on the season and finished at 10-2 in the Lone Star Conference, advance to the conference tournament for the second time in school history next weekend at West Texas A&M.
"We're starting all over," Flores-Stafford said. "This is just a prelude to next week."
Abilene Christian claimed the tournament's fourth seed by finishing 14-13 and 8-4.
