Mustangs stumble against Cameron in LSC quarters

CANYON, Texas – Cameron put together a 7-0 run to close out the third game and cruised to a 25-30, 30-28, 30-20 win over Midwestern State Friday afternoon in the Lone Star Conference quarterfinal at the West Texas A&M Events Center.

"When they got the run in the third game, we just tightened up," MSU coach Venera Flores-Stafford said. "We played every point after that like it was a life or death situation and couldn't loosen up."

The Mustangs, who fell to 27-5 on the season, will now have to wait for the Monday's tournament selection which is due at 8 a.m.

"I feel really disappointed for the seniors to go out like this," Flores-Stafford said. "I hope what we have done in the regular season will help get into the tournament. This loss is pretty bad for us."

MSU's three seniors competed well as outside hitter Krissa Johnson led the Mustangs with 15 kills, Rachel Gilmore had three kills and eight digs and defensive specialist Carley Schick had three digs.

Junior right side hitter Whitney Maxwell got the Mustangs off to a quick start by keying the 30-25 win in Game 1 with five kills as MSU logged a .333 kill rate.

But the attack percentage would fall as the match progressed as the Aggies overcame a 28-27 deficit late in Game 2 with consecutive kills from Whitney Long and Fernanda Queiroz and a dump by setter Laura Ellerbrock to notch a 30-28 win.

The teams played a tight Game 3 until Cameron coach John Haroun called a timeout with the Mustangs leading 17-15.

The Aggies reeled off an 11-1 run to take control of the match.

Queiroz led a pack of four Aggies with double-digit kills with 16, while Ellerbrock finished with 53 assists and 10 digs and Lindsay Paziuk had 12 digs.

Johnson led MSU with 15 kills and a .312 hitting percentage, while Maxwell had 13 kills with a .550 kill rate.

Junior setter Allison  Schreiber finished with 50 assists, 10 digs and five kills.

Sophomore middle blocker Sesley Graves paced a 10-block effort with five of her own.

Cameron (14-16) will move on to the LSC semifinals to face the winner of the Texas A&M-Kingsville and Central Oklahoma Friday night at 5 p.m.
