BLACKWATER DRAW, N.M. - No. 21 Midwestern State rolled up 597 yards of total offense in a 63-7 win over Eastern New Mexico Saturday afternoon at Greyhound Stadium.

The Mustangs, who improved to 8-2 on the season and 3-2 in the Lone Star Conference South Division, will battle Abilene Christian in a crucial NCAA Division II Southwest Region battle next Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

True freshman Marcus Mathis paced a 332-yard rushing attack with his third 100-yard performance of the season finishing with exactly 100 yards on 13 carries, including a 10-yard scoring run to open the third quarter.

B.J. Mathis finished with 91 yards on seven carries with a long run of 54 yards. He added a 1-yard TD plunge in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Daniel Polk mashed out 306 yards of total offense in just three quarters of work. The 6-2, 202-pounder from Dallas completed 15-of-24 passes for 248 yards and three touchdowns. Polk added 52 rushing yards on seven rushes.

Polk connected with DelJuan Lee on scoring tosses of 12 and 17 yards to give the Mustangs a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Lee finished the day with 91 yards on seven receptions.

Polk would hit Andy Tanner on a 38-yard flag route after linebacker Cody Thompson recorded the first his two interceptions to set up MSU at the Eastern New Mexico 38-yard line.

Joe Chatman scored on a 2-yard run before Marcus Mathis closed out the first-half scoring to give the Mustangs a commanding 28-0 halftime lead.

The Midwestern State defense was nearly flawless limiting NCAA Division II's top-ranked rushing attack to just 97 yards as the Greyhounds could only muster 167 yards of total offense.

Eastern New Mexico was averaging 332.2 rushing yards per game coming into the week.

Freshman Ryan Craven paced the MSU defense with seven tackles, while Cody Thompson finished with six tackles and two interceptions.

Greyhound quarterback Michael Benton, who came with the seventh highest rushing yards per game average in Division II at 151.6 yards per game, was limited to 47 yards on 14 carries.

Eastern New Mexico, who fell to 4-6 and 0-6, closes the season at Oklahoma Panhandle State next Saturday.
