WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State was unable to hold off No. 17 Southwestern Oklahoma State Thursday night as the Bulldogs came away with a 78-71 overtime at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The Mustangs held a nine-point advantage with 5:49 to play after
Chris Davis canned his second trey of the game to answer Taylor Hazelbaker's 3-pointer and give MSU a 59-50 lead.
But the Bulldogs outscored MSU 13-4 the rest of the way as the Mustangs needed a pair from free throws from Davis to send the game into overtime.
"We did exactly what we've been doing on the road," MSU coach
Jeff Ray said. "We got up 59-50 and we make some critical turnovers and couldn't get any stops."
The Bulldogs used an 8-2 keyed by a four-point spurt from Clarke Hale and a 3-pointer by Trevor Guy to take control of the overtime period and cruise to their fifth-straight win.
Southwestern Oklahoma was led by Nate Perry, who dropped in a game-high 23 points, while Guy and Hale added 16 each.
Midwestern State was led by Trajinkski Grigsby, who had 17 points and pulled down 12 rebounds.
Davis added 15, while
Nolan Richardson IV added 13.
The Mustangs, who fell to 1-4 on the season, play host to Cameron Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
Southwestern Oklahoma improved to 5-0.
