No. 7 MSU blanks Greyhounds in card-riddled affair, 4-0

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State striker Daniel Brown celebrated Senior Night with his 22nd goal to give the No. 7 Mustangs the early lead Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field.

But it was Brannon Calvert's heads-up clear off the line in the 10th minute of the game that gave MSU early momentum as the Mustangs claimed a 4-0 shutout result over Eastern New Mexico.

With the win, Midwestern improves to 16-2 on the season and 7-0 in the Southwest Soccer Conference. The Mustangs have now won four-straight since falling 1-0 at Incarnate Word and has won 13 of their last 14.

Eastern New Mexico fell to 8-9-1 and 2-5-1.

The Mustangs can certify their No. 1 ranking in Midwest Region and clinch the right to host the first two rounds of the NCAA Division II Championship Tournament with a win over rival West Texas A&M Sunday at the MSU Soccer Field. That game is set to kickoff at 1 p.m.

But Midwestern will have to do it without the services of center back Robert Swann and striker Kyle Kmiec. Swann drew a red card in the 72nd minute, while Kmiec picked up his fifth caution of the season in the 48th minute.

It was the Greyhounds, however, that took the worst end of a match that featured six cautions and three ejections. Eastern New Mexico's Donnell Jackson picked up a red card in the 48th minute, while Ryan Atkinson was ejected after picking up his second yellow in the 69th minute.

In between all the bookings, the Mustangs dominated play outshooting Eastern New Mexico 27-7 and outhustled the Greyhounds for the first 14 corner kick opportunities of the night.

Brown gave the Mustangs a 1-0 intermission advantage by heading in a Brian Martinez serve off of a free kick.

Swann converted a penalty kick in the 52nd minute, while Jake Landon and Efren Castillo close out the scoring for the Mustangs.

MSU clinched at least a share of the Southwest Soccer Conference title with the victory and can complete a season sweep through the league with a win Sunday against West Texas A&M.
