Big trio, Mustangs hammer Angelo State 3-0

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Midwestern State received big-game performances from Whitney Maxwell, Alysha Pritt and Sesley Graves to clobber Angelo State 30-26, 30-22 and 30-28 Thursday night at Junell Center/Stephens Arena.

The win improves the Mustangs to 26-4 on the season and 9-2 in the Lone Star Conference, but they will need to extend their current four-match winning streak on Saturday to clinch the No. 3 seed in next weekend's Lone Star Conference championship tournament in Canyon.

"Our motivation is getting to the NCAA Tournament and to get there we'll have to go through the conference tournament," MSU coach Venera Flores-Stafford said. "We need to maintain where we are and get the third seed."

Midwestern needs to upend Abilene Christian on Saturday, who improved to 14-12 and 8-3 with a three-game win over Cameron on Thursday, to keep its current position. The teams square off at 11 a.m. in ACU's Moody Coliseum.

Abilene Christian, which has won five of six matches since returning from the Washburn (Kan.) Lady Blue Fall Classic last month in Topeka, would take the third with a win. The Wildcats lone loss during that stretch came against Central Oklahoma.

"Abilene Christian is a solid team and we'll have to play at our best in their home arena," Flores-Stafford said.

Maxwell, a junior Mabank, Texas, led the Mustangs in Thursday night's win with 12 kills, while making a single error to hit .344.

Pritt added 10 kills while hitting .350, while Graves had eight kills with a .312 attack percentage.

The trio of offensive stars also wreaked havoc on the Angelo State attack limiting it to a .053 team attack percentage while recording 11 total team blocks.

Graves led the way with six blocks, while Maxwell and Pritt had five each.

Junior libero Shay Velasquez had 14 digs, while junior setter Allison Schreiber directed the Mustangs' attack to a .226 team hitting percentage with 37 assists.

Angelo State fell to 6-20 and 4-7.
