Bristow’s blast gives Mustangs 2-1 win over ENMU

PORTALES, N.M. – Kari Bristow blasted in a free kick from 40 yards out in the 71st minute to lead Midwestern State to a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Eastern New Mexico Sunday afternoon at the ENMU Soccer Field.

The win was the fourth-straight for the Mustangs, who have now won six of their last seven to improve to 12-3-2 on the season.

"The further we go along, the more experience and patience we have," MSU coach Jeff Trimble said. "We're just not getting discouraged."

Midwestern State will play in the Lone Star Conference Soccer Championships Friday at noon in Edmond, Okla. and will play the winner of Thursday's first round match between Angelo State and West Texas A&M.

With a win, the Mustang would play in the conference championship game Sunday at Tom Thompson Field beginning at 1 p.m.

The games will be available for Web broadcast on www.lsclive.tv.

Eastern New Mexico jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Uli Stack scored on a restart in the 32nd minute when she headed in a cross from Katharine Coulombe.

Midwestern State fought back after intermission as sophomore striker Katy Lukert beat three defenders for a breakaway down the right wing, then beat Eastern New Mexico keeper Stephanie Sanchez for the equalizer in the 62nd minute.

The Mustangs scored the game winner after Kendra Clemons took a foul from 40 yards out to set up Bristow's game-winning blast.

"It was a great shot – a line drive the whole way," Trimble said. "We have confidence now and we're playing good soccer and now we don't have a quarterfinal game with a week to prepare."

Eastern New Mexico dropped to 9-9 on the season and 3-7 in conference.
