Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Brown’s hat trick leads No. 8 Mustangs past NSU, 3-2 in OT

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Daniel Brown moved into the MSU record books Sunday afternoon at the NSU Soccer Complex.

And the senior forward took his teammates on his narrow shoulders to lift No. 8 Midwestern State to a 3-2 overtime win over Northeastern State.

"It was an outstanding game by Daniel Brown," MSU coach Doug Elder said. "He single-handedly led us to a win."

Brown also set the season standard for goal scorers since Midwestern State became a member of NCAA Division II in 1995.

The striker from Arlington, Texas scored his 19th, 20th and 21st goals of the season after he passed Alex Opoku and Brandon Swartzendruber with a goal Friday night at Missouri Southern. Opoku and Swartzendruber had 17 goals in 1999 and 2006, respectively.

Kris Henderson is MSU's all-time single season goal leader with 26 in 1990.

Brown exchanged goals with Northeastern State's Clark Bradford during regulation as the teams battled to a 2-2 draw to send the match to overtime.

Brown then converted a breakaway opportunity in the 10th minute of the first overtime for the game winner.

Brown's first goal of the contest came on a free kick at the top of the box in the 20th minute before he hit a chip in full stride off of a serve from Brannon Calvert over the NSU keeper Devon Murray's head in the 66th minute.

"We didn't play great, but part of that was how they played us," Elder said. "Give credit to Northeastern for what the coach called their best game of the season. We were fortunate to get out of there with a win."

The win was the MSU's third-straight and 12th in its last 13 matches as the Mustangs improved to 15-2 on the season and 6-0 in the Southwest Soccer Conference.

Midwestern returns to the MSU Soccer Field for Senior Night on Friday when it takes on Eastern New Mexico at 7 p.m.

The Mustangs close the season Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. when they play host to West Texas A&M.

Northeastern State fell to 5-11-2 and 1-5-2.
