MSU Softball takes two at Lady Buff Classic; win streak at 11

AMARILLO, Texas – The Midwestern State University Mustangs extended their winning streak to 11 games with two wins in the Holiday Inn/Lady Buff Classic Saturday afternoon at the Rick Klein Sports Complex.

The winning streak is the longest since the softball program was brough back in 2004. That season, MSU had a nine-game winning streak from March 9-20, which was snapped by St. Edwards.

The Mustangs conclude play in the Holiday Inn/Lady Buff Classic with a pair of games on Sunday. MSU faces St. Edward's at 10 a.m. before closing the classic at 2 p.m. against Southeastern Oklahoma State.

Ashley Kuchenski improved to 5-2 on the season while earning a 4-2 over Western New Mexico in the first game of the day. Kuchenski struck out seven before giving way to Brittany Willson with two outs in the top of the sixth.

Willson induced WNMU's Cassidy Caringi to pop out to shortstop to earn her first save of the season.

Willson struck out five and allowed two hits over five innings in a 9-1 drubbing of Northeastern State (Okla.) in Game 2.

Kuchenski went 3-for-3 at the plate, driving in a pair of runs in Game 1. Amanda Hill and Jessica Rodriguez added two hits each as the Mustangs put up two-spots in the second and fifth innings.

Western New Mexico had the tying run on first base when Willson retired Caringi to end the game.

Racheal Jackson delivered a grand slam on a lined shot down the left-field line to lead the Mustangs past LSC North foe Northeastern State (Okla.).

Stephanie Wardlaw and Allison Tidwell paced the MSU attack with two hits apiece.

MSU begins division play Tuesday afternoon when it plays host to East Central University (Okla.) at the Sunrise Optimist Complex. First pitch for the scheduled doubleheader is slated for 2 p.m.
