WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Midwestern State lost to St. Edward's 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-17) on Friday at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. The Mustangs hit .157 with 33 kills, while SEU finished at .327 with 47 kills.
Midwestern State (6-7, 2-1) stayed level deep into the first set, but St. Edward's (7-6, 2-1) scored three straight after a 14-14 tie and held off a late push for a 25-21 win. Earlier, the Maroon & Gold answered several early Hilltoppers points with kills from
Remi Madison,
Nyle Mathis,
Aubree Bunker and
Isabella Dickens, while Madison added a service ace to put MSU up 5-4. After falling behind 17-14,
TaNia Penn helped keep the Mustangs within reach with two kills, and Dickens added another to make it 23-19. Mathis and
Jaiden Wright combined on a block to fight off set point, and
Macy Scheer followed with an ace before SEU closed the set on the next point.
The Mustangs' biggest response came in the middle of the second set, when they won five of six points after trailing 15-13 to take an 18-16 lead, with Dickens supplying two kills and
Aaliyah Toppin adding a service ace. Earlier, MSU fell behind 7-1 before cutting the deficit to 10-8 behind kills from Penn, Dickens and Mathis, plus a combined block from Wright and Mathis.
Ella Koch's kill later put the Mustangs back in front 19-18, and after SEU tied it at 19-19, kills from Penn and Toppin gave the home side a 21-19 lead. The Hilltoppers answered to move ahead 22-21, Wright tied the set with a kill, and Penn kept MSU alive at 24-23 before SEU finished the set 25-23.
The Maroon & Gold's biggest push in the third set came after SEU moved ahead 10-5, with Toppin putting down a kill and Wright adding two kills around a
Giselle Cazares service ace to bring the score to 11-9. Earlier, Mathis and Dickens each finished Scheer assists, and a Hilltoppers attack error brought the Mustangs within 8-5 before the visitors stretched the margin again. SEU answered the 11-9 score with three of the next four points to go up 14-10, but Wright and Dickens kept MSU producing kills as the set reached 18-14. The Mustangs added a block from Wright and Scheer to make it 21-16 and got another Wright kill at 24-16, but SEU scored the final point to take the set 25-17.
Dickens led the Mustangs with 10 kills while hitting .364 and added four digs. Penn posted seven kills on 11 attacks with no errors, hitting .636. Wright finished with five kills on nine swings without an error and added four block assists. Scheer recorded 19 assists, six digs, two block assists and an ace.
