CANYON, Texas — Midwestern State quarterback
Kaden Brown had a record-setting night as Midwestern State ended a six-game losing streak in its rivalry with West Texas A&M and earned its first-ever win in five visits to Bain-Schaeffer Buffalo Stadium. Brown threw for 475 yards and three touchdowns. MSU finished with 198 yards on the ground and three more scores in a 41-31 victory on Saturday night.
Brown set the MSU school record with 507 yards of total offense, the most for any NCAA Division II player this season. Quarterback Phillip Boggs held the school record since 2001 with 500 yards of total offense at East Central in 2001. Brown also surpassed Layton Rabb for the MSU single game passing record, completing 29 of 43 passes for 475 yards, which is the most passing yards in a game by any D2 quarterback this season. Rabb held the school record with 467 yards passing against Angelo State in 2018, the last year in which MSU defeated WT. The junior from Midlothian, Texas, threw three touchdown passes, gained 32 yards on the ground and scored a rushing touchdown for the Mustangs.
Midwestern State (3-1, 2-0) converted 13 of 21 third downs, went 2-for-2 on fourth down and finished with 36 first downs — the second most in school history behind 39 against Southeastern Oklahoma in 2001. The Mustangs ran 96 plays and held the ball for 39:44, finishing the night with the second-most passing yards as a team in program history.
The Mustangs used a mix of quick scoring possessions and longer drives to build their offense. A six-play scoring drive that featured a 40-yard pass by Brown moved MSU from a 7-7 tie to a 14-7 lead, and another possession in the third quarter went 12 plays and 75 yards as the Maroon & Gold turned a 17-14 deficit into a 20-17 lead.

West Texas A&M (1-3, 1-1) totaled 364 yards and 19 first downs. MSU scored on six of seven red-zone trips.
Fabian Baez caught six passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns.
Joseph Dodds rushed 24 times for 120 yards.
CJ Anderson led the Mustangs with 10 tackles.
Midwestern State returns to Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls, Texas, for Maroon Day on Oct. 3. The first 250 fans in attendance get a free MSU reversible bucket hat sponsored by Pepsi, and the Mustangs will tangle with Western Oregon at 2 p.m.
