AUSTIN, Texas – Midwestern State extended its unbeaten streak to 20 games and has a five-game winning streak following a 1-0 victory over St. Edward's in the conference opener at Lewis-Chen Family Field. The Hilltoppers hosted the Mustangs under the lights for the first time, and the start of the game was delayed by inclement weather.
Midwestern State goalkeeper Jake Morris played a long ball to Cooper Tea, who headed the ball into the path of Lawrence Doe, Jr. Doe made a run to the byline on the right side and played a low cross to the back post. Defender Jackson Stubbs slid in and attempted a clearance for the Hilltoppers, but the ball popped up to the chest of Alan Rivera, who volleyed it into the back of the net for his second goal of the season in the 62nd minute.
Midwestern State (7-0-2, 1-0-0) scored with its only shot on goal, but the Mustangs limited the Hilltoppers to two shots on goal. There were just 17 shots in the game, nine taken by the Mustangs, who outshot St. Edward's (1-4-2, 0-1-0) in the first half, 4-3.
Morris stopped a Bartek Zabek shot in the 36th minute, and he denied Zeke Beasley an equalizer in the 85th minute.
St. Edward's goalkeeper Edward Alonzi allowed the only goal of the game and did not make a save in the match for the Hilltoppers.
The game featured 32 fouls, and 15 were called against MSU, which saw four yellow cards. Skyler Krchnak, Liam Kervick, Cristopher Guevara and Cooper Tea were all booked. Jake Ciccarello was the only Hilltopper shown a yellow card during the match.
Midwestern State hosts Texas A&M International at Stang Park on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
