WICHITA FALLS, Texas – After a successful season for both the men and women's tennis teams at Midwestern State, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association recognized two Mustangs for their accomplishments this season.
Selin Sepken was named the South Central Regional ITA Women's Senior Player of the Year, and
Juan David Duque was named the South Central Regional ITA Most Improved Men's Player of the Year.
Sepken, a senior from Turkey, transferred to Midwestern State from Idaho and anchored the women's team with a 20-2 record at No. 1 singles. Sepken, No. 8 in the ITA Collegiate Rankings for NCAA Division II women's singles, won her sixth straight match to clinch the South Central Regional title for Midwestern State, which travels to Surprise, Arizona, for the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship.
Sepken is 19-2 this season with a 6-2 record against ranked opponents. Fifteen of Sepken's wins have come in straight sets. Four times this season, Sepken has dropped the first but rallied to win the match, and both of her losses have come in three-set battles. She has won 12 consecutive sets in completed matches since suffering a 6-4, 3-6, 3-6 loss to ninth-ranked Yona Bancarel of UT Tyler on April 11.
Sepken introduced herself to Mustang fans in the fall when she won the South Central Regional without dropping a set in six matches to earn an automatic bid to the ITA Cup. Sepken was 2-1 in singles at the 2025 ITA Cup.
Sepken has been a sensational doubles player as well, teaming with
Emilia Gyorgy for a 19-6 record this season. The duo has a 10-match winning streak entering the national tournament, which begins on May 19.
Duque wrapped up his senior campaign with a 13-7 record in singles, winning 10 of his last 13 completed matches. The Colombian was 6-5 at No. 3 singles and was 6-1 when manning the No. 4 slot. He also finished with a 1-1 record at No. 2 singles.
Duque and
Bruno Sanchez are No. 10 in the ITA Collegiate Rankings for DII doubles. The duo had a nine-match winning streak snapped with a 5-7 loss to No. 8-ranked Mattia Ghedin and Kelly Giese of Lubbock Christian at the South Central Regional in Lubbock. Duque and Sanchez finished the campaign with a 12-6 record at No. 1 singles for the Mustangs.
In the fall season, Sanchez and Duque won the South Central Regional doubles title to earn an automatic berth in the ITA Cup.
