ODESSA, Texas – Midwestern State makes its final road trip of the season as it visits UT Permian Basin and Angelo State. The doubleheader at UTPB Softball Field gets underway at 2 p.m. on Friday afternoon, and the No. 13-ranked Rambelles host the Mustangs at Mayer Field for a twin bill that commences at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Midwestern State (6-36, 4-28) looks to end a five-game losing streak after losing three one-run games on its recent homestand. The Mustangs lost back-to-back 3-2 games against Texas A&M International, including one in eight innings, and they fell to Texas A&M-Kingsville, 1-0, in a 10-inning affair. Midwestern State is 2-10 in one-run games this season and has lost all six of its extra-inning games.
MSU has also dropped four games decided by two runs this season.
UT Permian Basin won the first game of a doubleheader at Mustangs Park on Feb. 22, 2-0, but the Mustangs came back to route the Falcons in the nightcap, 18-1, in a five-inning affair.
Kayleigh Bowers threw six innings in the 2-0 loss to UTPB earlier this year, and the junior right-hander from Phoenix, Arizona, is coming off one of her best performances in the circle this season. Bowers struck out 11 Javelinas over 10 innings and allowed just four hits with one walk but was once again betrayed by a lack of run support.
Bowers 2-16 record belies the quality of her work. The Mustangs best hurler has a 3.48 ERA over 23 appearances, including 20 starts. She has thrown nine complete games and been in the circle for 116 2/3 innings this season. She leads the team with 55 strikeouts.
Chipper Mayorga leads the offense with a .333 batting average and 49 total bases in 42 games this season. The freshman from San Antonio has hit six doubles this season and leads the team with 19 RBIs.
Hayeli Acosta is hitting .281 for the season but over her last 14 games, the senior from Dallas is hitting .369 (17-for-46), and she has at least one hit in 11 of those games. Acosta has taken over the catching duties since
Madison Stewart sustained an injury on March 14.
Marisela Landa leads the Mustangs with eight extra-base hits, including seven doubles and she is one of four players to hit a home run for MSU this season.
Paige Scanlin leads the team with three homers.
Tatum Waller and
Stormy Daniel have also hit home runs for the Mustangs this season.
Midwestern State is averaging 2.7 runs per game this season, while opponents are scoring 5.9 runs per outing.
UT PERMIAN BASIN (16-25, 7-23)
Midwestern State leads the all-time series with the Falcons, 25-8, and had a five-game winning streak in the series snapped with a 2-0 loss in the first game of a doubleheader at Mustangs Park earlier this season. The Mustangs are 10-4 when visiting UTPB and have won four of their last five games in Odessa, sweeping a doubleheader last season with a 6-1 victory in the opener and a 1-0 triumph in the nightcap.
UT Permian Basin is 9-13 at home this season and went 2-2 on its last homestand, splitting doubleheaders with Sul Ross State and Western New Mexico.
The Falcons settled for a split at St. Edward's last week, winning the first game 7-3 but losing the nightcap at Diane Daniels Field, 5-2. The doubleheader with St. Mary's was canceled due to inclement weather in San Antonio.
Carlee Quintero a sophomore from San Antonio, Texas, is hitting .331 to lead the Falcons, who are hitting .251 as a team.
Freshman outfielder Amathyst Gonzalez leads UTPB with 19 RBIs and also has a team-leading eight doubles this season.
Angelina Arriaga, a senior from Abilene, Texas, has hit four home runs for the Falcons, who have hit 22 homers as a team this season.
Jessica Cantrell has thrown 130 innings and is 11-8 in the circle for UTPB. She has allowed 129 hits, including 38 extra-base hits and opponents are hitting .253 off the sophomore from Elgin, Texas. She struck out 10 Mustangs and allowed just three hits in a 2-0 win on Feb. 22 at Mustangs Park.
ANGELO STATE (38-9, 27-5)
Angelo State leads the all-time series with the Mustangs, 49-22, but Midwestern State earned a 6-5 win at Mayer Field in the second game of a doubleheader last season. The Rambelles won three of their last four games against the Mustangs after a doubleheader sweep at Mustangs Park on Feb. 20, which included an 18-0 victory in the first game. The Rambelles scored four runs in the seventh inning of the nightcap to win the second game, 7-2.
Midwestern State is 5-26 when visiting Angelo State. The Mustangs victory at San Angelo last season was their first since 2016 and broke a 12-game losing streak as the visitor in the series.
Angelo State hosts Lubbock Christian in a doubleheader on Friday before hosting Midwestern State on Sunday afternoon.
The Rambelles have an eight-game winning streak after sweeping St. Mary's in San Antonio last week, 6-4 and 5-0. The victory in the second game was their 10th shutout of the season, and the Rambelles improved their road record to 14-6.
At home this season, Angelo State is 18-3 and has a four-game winning streak as the host since suffering a 3-2 loss to UT Permian Basin on April 2.
Zoey Sifuentes is the third-leading hitter in the conference with a .437 batting average, and she is fourth in the league with 62 hits, including a league-leading 20 doubles. Sifuentes and Tatiana Tucker have each hit eight home runs for the Rambelles, who are averaging 6.7 runs per game.
The Rambelles have the third-best team batting average in the conference at .331, and they are fourth in the league with 403 hits, including 37 homer runs and 85 doubles.
Angelo State is second in the conference with a .439 on-base percentage and a .526 slugging percentage.
The Rambelles boast the best team ERA in the LSC at 2.43 and also has the best WHIP in the conference at 1.21.
Ashleigh Dendas has thrown 94 2/3 innings, allowing 89 hits with 61 strikeouts and 28 walks in 22 appearances, including 18 starts. She is 10-5 with a 3.18 ERA for the Rambelles.
Maddison Ruiz has struck out 82 batters in 93 1/3 innings and is 10-4 with a 2.25 ERA in 21 appearances, including 16 starts this season. Ruiz has 82 strikeouts and issued 36 walks this season.
Addy Ewing is 14-0 in the circle with a 2.19 ERA. She has 28 appearances, including nine starts, and has thrown 76 2/3 innings this season. She has allowed 68 hits while striking out 50 batters and walking 20.
