Midwestern State wraps up regular season at home against WNMU and Sul Ross State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State closes out the regular season this week with Western New Mexico and Sul Ross State visiting MSU Tennis Center. Western New Mexico faces the Mustangs at 10 a.m. on Friday, and Sul Ross State visits on Saturday at 10 a.m.

No. 35-ranked Midwestern State (14-6, 6-2) posted back-to-back victories on the road last week, defeating Cameron, 5-2, before scoring a 6-1 victory over St. Mary's.

No. 8-ranked Selin Sepken improved her record to 15-2 at No. 1 singles for the Mustangs, including a 4-2 record against nationally ranked opponents. The fifth-year senior from Turkey defeated Jenna Goessel of Cameron, 6-3, 6-2, and breezed past Alessia Terlizzi of St. Mary's in her last match, 6-1, 6-1.

Sepken and Emilia Gyorgy, the No. 7 ranked doubles pairing in NCAA Division II, won their last five matches at No. 2 doubles, improving their record this spring to 14-6.

Gyorgy, a freshman from Hungary, had a five-match winning streak at No. 2 singles snapped with a 2-6, 4-6 loss to Selina Wu of St. Marys, but Gyorgy won 11 of her last 13 singles matches and is 14-6 for the Mustangs.

Camila Garcia has an 11-match winning streak for the Mustangs after defeating Isabella Olsson of St. Mary's, 6-1, 6-2. The sophomore from Colombia has not dropped a set in her last five matches and is 17-2 this spring, primarily at No. 3 singles. Garcia is 2-0 against nationally ranked opponents.

Garcia and Jasmine Crain are another formidable duo for Midwestern State with a 17-3 record this season. The duo was 14-1 at No. 2 doubles and is 5-3 against conference opponents. Garcia and Crain have played No. 1 doubles in the last five matches and have a 3-2 record in those contests.

Alessia Dolce and Hattie Berend improved to 10-2 at No. 3 doubles with a 7-5 win over Isabella Olsson and Sarah Wooten of St. Mary's. The duo is 6-2 in conference duals this season.

Dolce has a six-match winning streak at No. 4 singles and has not lost a set since 3-6, 5-7 loss to Benedetta Raggiotti of Angelo State on March 28. The sophomore from Italy is 12-6 this spring, winning eight of her last 10 singles matches for the Stangs.

Crain won six of her eight matches against conference foes, and the freshman from Edmond, Oklahoma, won five of her last six matches at No. 5 singles, coasting to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Sarah Wooten of St. Mary's in her last outing.

Berend, a junior from Wichita Falls, improved to 7-6 at No. 6 singles by defeating Breeze Simon of the Rattlers in a match tiebreak, 3-6, 6-2, (11-9), at San Antonio last weekend.

Midwestern State is 75-37 in singles matches this season and 43-14 in doubles. The Mustangs won the doubles point in 16 of 20 dual matches this season.

WESTERN NEW MEXICO (4-13, 1-7)

Midwestern State Is 9-0 all-time against the Western Mustangs, including a 3-0 record at MSU Tennis Center. MSU swept WNMU for the fifth time in the history of the series last year, winning 7-0 in Silver City, New Mexico. WNMU last visited Midwestern State in 2023 and lost 6-1. The Western Mustangs have only claimed two dual-match points out of a possible 23 when visiting MSU since their first trip to Wichita Fall in 2017.

Western New Mexico arrives at MSU Tennis Center this year with an eight-match losing streak following a 7-0 loss to Lubbock Christian at home last Saturday. WNMU is 1-3 on the road this season with their only victory coming at Sul Ross State.

Western New Mexico is 29-61 in singles matches this season and 14-31 in doubles as they enter the final week of the regular season. The Western Mustangs have won the doubles point in four duals this spring but have only won two doubles matches in their last eight duals.

SUL ROSS STATE (0-12, 0-8)

Midwestern State is 7-4 in its all-time series with Sul Ross State, but the two schools met for the first time since 1995 last spring, and the Mustangs dominated the Lobos, 7-0, winning every set 6-0 en route to the victory at Alpine, Texas.

Sul Ross State is visiting Cameron and Southeastern Oklahoma State before facing the Mustangs on Saturday morning.

The Lobos have not taken a point in a dual match since a 6-1 loss at the University of Dallas on March 30, which was only the second point taken by Sul Ross State this spring.
