PARIS, Texas — Midwestern State fell to No. 8-ranked Southern Arkansas in a doubleheader at Paris Junior College on Wednesday afternoon, losing 8-0 in the first game and 6-2 in the second.
In the first game, Midwestern State managed only three hits, while Southern Arkansas capitalized with a six-run third inning.
AvaMarie Perry scored on a throwing error after reaching on a single and advancing on a passed ball. Jenny Bouthillier's fielder's choice allowed Maddie Leal to score, and Regan Dillon's single brought both Bouthillier and Leal home. Paris Endris' single added another run as Sophia Luetticke crossed the plate, concluding the inning with the Muleriders leading 6-0.
In the sixth inning, SAU extended its lead, with Luetticke scoring on a throwing error, and Briana Jones, pinch running for Dillon, scoring on Endris' double, making it 8-0.
Hayeli Acosta contributed with a hit and a stolen base, while also recording a caught stealing as the catcher.
Myka Riley and
Marisela Landa each added a hit in two at-bats.
Isabela Cornell started the game for MSU, pitching 2 innings and allowing six runs on five hits. She struck out two batters and walked two, facing 14 batters in total.
Kayleigh Bowers relieved Cornell, pitching 3 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, while also striking out two.
Midwestern State (4-26) fell to Southern Arkansas University (30-3) in the second game, 6-2.
Despite collecting 10 hits, the Mustangs struggled to capitalize, scoring both of their runs in the fifth inning, while Southern Arkansas secured its victory with a decisive five-run fourth inning. In the fourth inning, Southern Arkansas capitalized on errors to score five runs. Jenny Bouthillier brought in Kelsie Adams with a single, and Regan Dillon reached on an error, allowing two more runs to score. America Rubio and Paris Endris each added RBI hits, resulting in a 6–0 lead for Southern Arkansas after four innings.
Midwestern State responded in the fifth inning.
Mia Sanchez singled and advanced on an error, setting up
Stormy Daniel's RBI single that scored Sanchez.
Tatum Waller later singled up the middle, bringing in
Sydnie Rios, cutting the deficit to 6–2 by the end of the fifth inning. Despite a strong start in the first inning with three hits, MSU could not convert those opportunities into runs.
Stormy Daniel collected two hits and drove in one run while playing shortstop.
Mia Sanchez contributed with two hits and scored a run.
Tatum Waller added a hit and an RBI.
Kayleigh Bowers pitched two innings, allowing one earned run and striking out two batters.
Shyanne Florence entered in relief, pitching 1 2/3 innings, but struggled with control as she walked four batters and hit another, giving up two hits and one earned run amidst five total runs allowed.
Kaylin Salazar entered the circle next, pitching 1 2/3 innings and striking out three, despite issuing four walks and allowing one hit. Finally,
Isabela Cornell closed out the game with 2/3 of an inning, throwing just five pitches.
The next challenge for the Mustangs comes on Friday, March 27, as they travel to face Texas Woman's in Denton, Texas. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
