WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Midwestern State faced a tough doubleheader against Eastern New Mexico , falling 11-2 in the first game and 13-1 in the second at Mustangs Park on Friday. The Mustangs (4-22, 2-16) managed a total of ten hits across both games but struggled against a potent Eastern New Mexico offense (14-11, 10-8) that combined for 24 runs.
In the first game, the Mustangs managed four hits, including two doubles, but couldn't recover from a six-run third inning by Eastern New Mexico. The scoring began in the second inning when Emily Marsh doubled and scored on Lorissa Scott's RBI single, giving Eastern New Mexico an early 1-0 lead. Midwestern State responded in the third, as
Sydnie Rios walked and scored on
Chipper Mayorga's single, with
Tatum Waller crossing the plate on
Myka Riley's double. However, Eastern New Mexico quickly extended their lead to 7-2, capitalizing on errors and base hits.
The fourth inning saw Eastern New Mexico add four more runs, highlighted by Ana Oquita's single and Talia Martin's two-RBI single, concluding the first game with an 11-2 victory for the visitors.
Myka Riley stood out with a double and an RBI, while Mayorga and
Marisela Landa each hit a double.
In the second game, Eastern New Mexico jumped to an early lead, scoring five runs in the first inning, including a two-RBI single by Marissa Rodriguez. Midwestern State managed to get on the board when
Erikha Ibarra-Subia scored on a single by
Tatum Waller,but trailed at the end of the first inning, 5-1. The Mustangs struggled to keep pace as Rodriguez hit a solo home run in the third and Eastern New Mexico added an unearned run in the fourth to make it 7-1.
The fifth inning proved disastrous for MSU, as Eastern New Mexico scored six more runs, including another home run by Rodriguez and a two-RBI double by Giazza Lopez, finishing the game with a decisive 13-1 score. Waller collected a hit and an RBI, while Ibarra-Subia went 2-for-3 with a stolen base.
Chipper Mayorga and
Stormy Daniel also contributed to the offense.
On the pitching side,
Kayleigh Bowers started the first game, allowing six runs with three earned over four innings, while
Audrey Sierra struggled in the second, giving up five runs in just 1/3 of an inning.
Kaylin Salazar pitched 4 1/3 innings in relief, conceding seven earned runs on eight hits.
Isabela Cornell made brief appearances in both games, showcasing her ability to retire batters effectively.
