Mustangs return home to face Eastern New Mexico and No. 1-ranked West Texas A&M

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State returns to Mustangs Park for the first time in 26 days as it hosts Eastern New Mexico on Friday, and No. 1-ranked West Texas A&M visits on Sunday. The Greyhounds and Mustangs begin their doubleheader at 2 p.m. on Friday, and the Sunday twin bill with the Lady Buffs gets underway at 3 p.m.

Midwestern State (4-20, 2-14) is 1-5 at home this season and is coming off a 10-game road trip that saw the Mustangs pull out one victory. 

The last time MSU played at home, Erikha Ibarra-Subia, Hayeli Acosta and Madison Stewart all had three hits as the Mustangs pounded UT Permian Basin with 17 hits in an 18-1 victory. 

Chipper Mayorga has multiple hits in each of her last four games for MSU and is hitting .408 this season. The freshman second baseman from San Antonio has started all 24 games for the Mustangs and has at least one hit in all but four games this season. Mayorga leads the team with a .474 slugging percentage and is second on the team with 15 RBIs.

Ibarra-Subia leads the team with an on-base percentage of .453, and the junior outfielder has reached base in 14 consecutive games for the Mustangs. Ibarra -Subia is tied with Acosta for the team lead with 16 runs scored, and she leads the team with eight steals on 11 attempts.

Midwestern is 33-for-42 on stolen base attempts. Freshman Stormy Daniel has seven steals without being caught this season.

Senior catcher Madison Stewart is hitting .455 over her last 13 games and has pushed her season batting average to .302 with six doubles and 10 RBIs.

Marisela Landa leads the team with 16 RBIs. The senior first baseman is tied with Stewart for the team lead with six doubles and homered in her last game at Mustangs Park, when she drove home four runs in the 18-1 win over UT Permian Basin. Landa also drove in five runs when she went 3-for-3 in an 11-3 win over St. Edward's during the recent road trip.

Tatum Waller is one of three players with a home run for the Mustangs this season, and the senior center fielder from Forney, Texas, has 10 RBIs this season. 

Paige Scanlin leads the team with two home runs, and the junior outfielder from Conroe, Texas, has seven RBIs for the Mustangs, who are averaging 3.17 runs per game. 

The Mustangs' pitching staff is seventh in the LSC with an ERA of 4.25, and opponents are hitting .312 against MSU.

Junior Kayleigh Bowers (0-9) from Phoenix, Arizona, has seen the most work in the circle for the Stangs this season, making 13 appearances with 11 starts. Bowers has pitched 67 innings with 25 strikeouts and a 3.55 ERA.

Freshman Audrey Sierra (1-1) from Angleton, Texas, made her first two starts of the season on the recent road trip. She was the winning pitcher in an 11-3 victory at St. Edward's, allowing three earned runs on six hits over five innings with just one walk. 

Sierra also worked 3 1/3 innings in a 4-2 loss at Lubbock Christian, allowing one earned run on four hits. 

For the season, Sierra has thrown 25 2/3 innings and issued only seven walks. She has a 3.00 ERA in nine appearances.

Isabella Cornell (2-5) has thrown 35 innings over 11 appearances with five starts for the Mustangs. The junior from Fort Worth, Texas, has 17 strikeouts and a 3.40 ERA.

EASTERN NEW MEXICO (12-11, 8-8) 


Midwestern State leads the all-time series with ENMU, 28-15, but lost three of four games against the Greyhounds last season. ENMU swept a doubleheader at Mustangs Park last year, winning the first game 9-1 and taking the nightcap in nine innings, 5-3.

Eastern New Mexico has a three-game winning streak after sweeping St. Edward's in Portales last weekend. The Greyhounds are 3-4 on the road this season. 

Sophomore infielder Christina Meneses is hitting .431 with four doubles, a triple and five home runs for the Greyhounds. The native of Glendale, Arizona, leads the team 22 RBIs. Meneses was 2-for-13 with a two-run homer in a 3-1 victory against the Mustangs last season in Portales. 

Eastern New Mexico is hitting .281 as a team and is scoring 5.8 runs per game. The pitching staff is allowing opponents to hit .304 with a 5.85 ERA.

Miranda Guillen (5-4) has pitched 5 1/3 innings in 13 appearances with 10 starts for ENMU. Guillen has 55 strikeouts and has allowed 28 walks. Opponents are hitting .290 against Guillen, who threw her fifth complete game of the season in a 4-3 win over the Hilltoppers last week. Guillen allowed two earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and one walk in the victory. 

Guillen faced Midwestern State four times last season and was 3-0 with two complete games. She allowed just two runs on 12 hits through 17 innings, registering 15 strikeouts while walking 10 batters. 

WEST TEXAS A&M (25-3, 15-1)


West Texas A&M leads the all-time series with MSU, 42-22, and has won its last 32 encounters with the Mustangs. Midwestern State's last victory in the series was a 12-11 triumph in Canyon at the South Central Region 1 Championships as the Mustangs matched a school record with six home runs and scored 11 runs over the final three innings.

The Lady Buffs visit Lubbock Christian before facing Midwestern State but have a 12-game winning streak entering this week's action. WT is 8-0 on the road this season. 

West Texas has scored 353 runs this season, which is 131 more than UT Tyler – the second highest scoring team in the LSC.

The Lady Buffs have 386 hits, which is 91 more than Cameron. WT is hitting .419 as a team, and Oklahoma Christian is second in the conference with a .361 team batting average.

Bella Holland (.551), Jodyn De Los Santos (.538), and Emily Liskai (.461) are three of the top four hitters in the LSC. Avery Cameron is seventh in the conference with a .434 batting average. 

De Los Santos has 11 doubles, four triples and 15 homers and is second among LSC hitter in all three categories. She leads the league with 51 RBIs. 

Brooke Janning (11-1) has thrown five complete games with two shutouts and leads the league with a 1.76 ERA. She has struck out 72 batters while issuing only 11 walks over 71 2/3 innings. 

Michael Mook earned his 400th win as a head coach earlier this year. He was 154-61 (.716) at Valley City State through four seasons, and in his seventh season at WT he is 267-64 (.807). The Lady Buffs have won at least 50 games in each of the last three seasons. 

Midwestern State is stepping outside of conference play for a midweek doubleheader against Southern Arkansas on Wednesday. The games will be played at Paris Junior College with the action starting at 3 p.m.
