Mustangs wrap up season-long road trip at Lubbock Christian

LUBBOCK, Texas – Midwestern State completes a 10-game road trip with a doubleheader at Maner Park on Saturday afternoon as it meets Lubbock Christian. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Lubbock Christian swept a doubleheader at Mustangs Park on Feb. 15, winning a 13-inning marathon, 3-2, and taking the nightcap 5-0.

Trailing 1-0 in Game 1, Erikha Ibarra-Subia led off the seventh inning with a double down the left-field line. Madison Stewart drove Ibarra-Subia home with a single to left to force extra innings. 

After the Lady Chaps took a 2-1 lead in the eighth inning, Stormy Daniel delivered an RBI single to score Hayeli Acosta, who reached on an error to lead off the inning.

Midwestern State had a runner thrown out at third base in the 10th inning and had a runner caught stealing in the 11th inning. 

Lubbock Christian broke through in the 13th inning with a Kadin Vire single followed by Coryn Burris sacrifice bunt. Ashlinn Hamilton drove home the winning run with a single to center as the Mustangs were retired in order to end the game.

The 13-inning game was the longest in the history of both programs and is tied for the longest Division II game by innings this season. Florida Tech beat Palm Beach Atlantic 10-7 in 13 innings five days later.

Alexis Clark had two RBIs and pitched a complete-game shutout in Game 2 as Lubbock Christian won 5-0 and took a 15-6 lead in the all-time series.

Midwestern State is 2-8 when visiting Lubbock Christian and lost its last seven trips to Maner Park.

Marisela Landa was 3-for-3 and had five RBIs as Midwestern State defeated St. Edward's in Austin on Sunday, 11-3, in five innings.  Chipper Mayorga and Tatum Waller each had two RBIs and scored twice in the victory for the Mustangs.

Landa took over the team lead in RBIs with 15, while Mayorga has 14 and Stewart has 10 for Midwestern State, which is 1-8 on the road this season.

Mayorga leads the team with 26 hits and a .377 batting average. The freshman from San Antonio opened the season with an 11-game hitting streak and has at least one hit in all but four games this season. 

Ibarra-Subia has the team's best on-base percentage at .449, and she leads the team with seven steals on 10 attempts this season. The junior outfielder from Albuquerque, New Mexico, has the second-most hits among the Mustangs with 22, and she has the second-best batting average at .338.

Stewart is 14-for-28 (.500) in her last 11 games after going 3-for-6 in the doubleheader against St. Edward's on Sunday. The senior catcher is hitting .310 for the season and leads the team with six doubles. She has thrown out seven base runners attempting to steal, which is fourth-most in the conference and 17th in NCAA Division II.

Myka Riley, a freshman from Irving, has appeared in 16 games this season. She has started eight games as the designated player. In her last nine appearances, Riley is hitting .368 (7-for-19) and has pushed her season batting average up to .296.

Midwestern State is 2-6 in one-run games and 0-4 in extra-inning contests this season after losing at St. Edward's in the second game of a doubleheader, 4-3, in nine innings.

Mayorga was 2-for-5 with two RBIs in the nightcap, but Sloane Hill drove in the winning run for the Hilltoppers in the ninth inning.

Kayleigh Bowers worked the first four innings in the circle, allowing one run on four hits with one walk. 

Bowers has started 11 games in the circle for the Mustangs and leads the team with 63 1/3 innings pitched. She has thrown five complete games and has only issued 20 walks this season. The junior righthander from Phoenix is still seeking her first win of the season (0-8) despite making seven quality starts, allowing three earned runs or less over six innings in the circle.

Isabella Cornell is second on the team with 31 2/3 innings pitched this season. Cornell has 10 appearances in the circle with four starts for the Mustangs. She has struck out 17 batters this season while issuing just 10 walks. She is 2-5 with one save this season.

Audrey Sierra made her first start of the season in Game 1 at St. Edward's on Sunday. The freshman from Angleton, Texas, earned the win after allowing three runs on six hits, throwing 41 of 69 pitches for strikes and walking just one batter through five innings, earning her first collegiate win (1-0) and her first complete game.

LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN (12-12, 8-6)

Lubbock Christian leads the all-time series with the Mustangs, 15-6, and has a four-game winning streak in the series. Midwestern State is 2-8 when visiting the Lady Chaps and has lost its last seven games at Maner Park. 

Midwestern State won four of its first five meetings with LCU, including a 4-2 victory at Lubbock in February of 2019, which is the last time the Mustangs won as the visiting team in the series.

Lubbock Christian swept a doubleheader at Maner Park last season, winning the first game, 4-2, and taking the nightcap, 8-7, after the Mustangs took a 6-1 lead into the fourth inning. The Lady Chaps scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat MSU.

Stewart homered in Game 1 and finished the doubleheader 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored for the Mustangs.

Lubbock Christian had a four-game winning streak before being swept at St. Mary's last weekend, losing the first game of the doubleheader, 5-0, and dropping the second game, 4-2.

The Lady Chaps are 2-2 at home this season with two wins over UT Permian Basin, but Angelo State swept a doubleheader at Maner Park on Feb. 22.

Kadin Vire is the leading hitter for LCU with a .429 batting average (33-for-77), nine doubles, three triples and a home run. Vire has 14 RBIs this season. 

In the first two games against the Mustangs this season, Vire was 5-for-9 (.556) with a double and two runs scored. Vire leads the Lady Chaps with 51 total bases and 21 runs scored. 

The junior catcher from Waxahachie, Texas, has appeared in all 24 games this season. She leads the team with an on-base percentage of .500 and a slugging percentage of .662.

Ashlinn Hamilton leads the Lady Chaps with 20 RBIs, and she drove in three runs during the doubleheader at Mustangs Park last month. Hamilton was 3-for-8 (.375) with a triple, scored twice and stole a base against MSU. 

Coryn Burris has hit a team-leading three home runs for the Lady Chaps, and she also has five double among her 17 hits in 24 games played. 

Natalee Gray, a sophomore pitcher from Burkburnett, Texas, allowed one run on one hit and recorded a season-high eight strikeouts over six innings against MSU on Feb. 15. Gray is 5-3 with a 3.40 ERA over 47 1/3 innings. She has made nine starts and appeared in 11 games this season. She leads the team with 27 strikeouts.

Alexis Clark pitched a complete-game, four-hit shutout at Mustangs Park in the second game of the doubleheader at Mustangs Park. Clark has a 4-3 record with a 2.84 ERA over 44 1/3 innings in the circle. The freshman from Lubbock has made nine starts and appeared in 11 games. She has struck out 18 batters this season.

Kendall Ward worked seven inning of relief and was the winning pitcher in the 13-inning game at MSU on Feb. 15. She allowed one run on five hits and struck out three on her way to the victory. Ward is 3-2 with a 2.81 ERA and has 22 strikeouts over 37 1/3 innings. The sophomore from Round Rock, Texas, has three starts among her 11 appearances this season.

Ward has four saves this season, which leads the conference and is the most among NCAA D2 pitchers.

Lubbock Christian has turned 14 double plays this season, which leads the LSC and is second-most among NCAA D2 programs. Only Colorado Christian has turned more double plays with 15 this season.

Daren Hays is in his 16th season as the head coach at LCU and boasts a record of 597-229 (.723).
