Men's Basketball Pips UT Tyler With Late Scoring Surge, 69-63

The Mustangs ended the game on a 11-2 strecth to beat the Patriots on the road.

TYLER, Texas — Midwestern St. (8-13, 6-8 Lone Star) secured a 69-63 victory over UT Tyler (10-10, 4-10 Lone Star) on Monday night at the Herrington Patriot Center. Midwestern St. capitalized on a strong first half, leading by 10 at the break, then closed the game on a 11-2 run to secure the win.

The game opened with Midwestern State establishing an early lead, as Jordan Reed scored the first points with a jumper at 18:55. UTT quickly tied the game at 4-4 with a jumper from Hudson Anderson at 17:31. The Mustangs then surged ahead with Jonathan Jackson's back-to-back 3-pointers, increasing their lead to 12-4 at 15:37. Davyon Butler added two additional 3-pointers, extending MSU's advantage to 22-15 by 7:07. Notably, Butler has now recorded at least 15 total points in his last two games. The half concluded with the Maroon & Gold holding a 36-26 lead, despite a late push from UTT, including a dunk and layup by Hudson Anderson.

Midwestern State secured a 69-63 victory over UT Tyler in a closely contested second half. The period featured multiple lead changes and ties, with UT Tyler's Noah Suarjaya opening the scoring with a jumper at 19:46. MSU's Reed responded effectively, scoring a layup at 17:18 and adding crucial free throws in the final seconds to seal the win. Jonathan Jackson's three-pointer at the 4:10 mark tied the game at 61, setting the stage for an intense final stretch where the Maroon & Gold held off the Patriots' comeback attempts. Jumpers from Jordan Reed at 3:00 and Kadon Jackson at 2:00, pushed the game to two possessions. Leading by just two points with 1:27 to go, the Mustangs connected on four free throws to seal the road victory.

Jordan Reed scored 18 points and recorded five assists, achieving season-highs in both categories, and leading the Mustangs in both. Kadon Jackson contributed with a season-high 13 points and dominated the boards, collecting a season-high total of 11 rebounds and achieving a season-high of 6 field goals made. The Denton, Texas native recorded his first double-double as a Mustang. Davyon Butler added 15 points and collected three steals, impacting the defensive end significantly. Jackson scored 11 points, including three 3-pointers (3-3 3PFG), and pulled down eight rebounds.

Sean Emfinger contributed 19 points, sinking three 3-pointers, and added three steals. Xavier Williams added eight points, five assists, and two steals for UTT. Sam Phipps dominated the boards with 11 rebounds and notched three steals.

The next challenge for Midwestern St. comes on Thursday, Feb. 12, as they host Texas A&M International at D.L. Ligon Coliseum in Wichita Falls, Texas. The game is set to tip off at 7:30 p.m. CT.
