Midwestern State opens season with 5-2 win over Northwest Missouri State

ARKANSAS CITY, Kansas – No. 18-ranked Midwestern State opened its 2026 dual-match season with a 5-2 victory over Northwest Missouri State on Friday afternoon.

Senior Jose Marques clinched the victory with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Bernardo Henriques at No. 4 singles.  Marques was 10-7 in singles for the Mustangs last season.

Germano Setti, ranked No. 7 in the nation, was dominant in a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Dominik Wijntjes at No. 1 singles. The senior from Brazil reached the quarterfinals and won two of his three singles matches at the prestigious ITA Cup in October.

Bruno Sanchez was equally impressive at No. 3 singles as he waltzed to a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Konstantin Feiel. Sanchez was 12-9 for the Mustangs last spring.

Juan David Duque opened his fourth season with the Mustangs by staging a come-from-behind 6-7, 6-2, 10-8 victory over Pavlo Vysotin at No. 2 singles.

Matthew Earle, who transferred to Midwestern State from Washburn, fell to Antonin Leborne in straight sets at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-3.

Thomas Leguizamon made his MSU debut  and was defeated 6-2, 7-6 by Hugo Alvarez Gonzalez at No. 5 singles.

Earle teamed up with Setti to win No. 2 doubles, 6-4, followed by Marquez and Cesar Llamas defeating Alvarez Gonzalez and Henriques, 6-2, to clinch the doubles point for the Mustangs.

Sanchez and Duque were upended at No. 1 doubles by Gage Foltz and Wijntjes, 6-3.

Midwestern State meets Cowley Community College on Saturday afternoon at 9 a.m.
