Mustangs tangle with LSC newcomer UT Dallas

DALLAS – Midwestern State continues its three-game road trip on Saturday afternoon as it visits UT Dallas for the first time in program history. Tipoff at UTD Activity Center is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Midwestern State (5-13, 2-10) is coming off back-to-back losses after an 89-69 loss at No. 23-ranked Lubbock Christian on Tuesday night. Kerbie Cash scored 25 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field and grabbed five rebounds for the Mustangs. Veonce Powell scored double digits for the fourth straight game, finishing with 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Da'Lonna Choice scored a season-high 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting.

The Mustangs had 14 steals in the loss at Lubbock. Cash led the team with three steals. Choice, Powell and Ta'Leeyah Glynn each had two steals. MSU is second in the conference and 29th among NCAA Division II programs with 12.3 steals per game. Cash leads the team and is third in the league with 2.2 steals per game. The Mustangs are forcing 21 turnovers per game, which is fourth best in the Lone Star Conference.

The Mustangs are fifth in the LSC with 2.8 blocks per game, and Macie Upshaw leads the team with 17 blocks in 18 games, which is seventh-most among shot blockers in the conference.

Midwestern State is attempting the fifth-most free throws in the country with 24.4 per game, which is second-most in the conference. MSU is fourth in the nation with 17.4 free throws made per outing, which leads the LSC. The Mustangs are fifth in the conference with a 71.5 percent conversion rate from the foul line.

Cash is 89 of 118 from the free-throw line (.754), sitting third in the LSC in both attempts and made free throws. The sophomore from Wiley, Texas, has the sixth-best free-throw percentage in the conference.

Cash is the fifth-leading scorer in the LSC with 16.5 points per game. Glynn is the second-leading scorer for the Stang Gang with 9.3 points per game. The Mustangs have the fifth-best free-throw shooting percentage in the conference, hitting 71.5 percent of their foul shots.

Midwestern State is averaging 64.8 points per game, while it holds opponents to 66.9 points per outing.

The Mustangs are leading the conference and 19th in the nation with 15.7 offensive rebounds per game, and they are fourth in the league with 38.8 boards per game.

Cash is the leading rebounder for MSU with 7.4 boards per game, which is fifth-most in the LSC, and Macie Upshaw is ninth in the conference with 6.5 rebounds per game. Upshaw pulls down 2.7 offensive rebounds per outing, and Cash grabs 2.6 offensive boards per game. The duo sits fifth and sixth in the league among offensive rebounders.
 

UT DALLAS (9-10, 6-6)


The Comets have lost back-to-back games on the heels of a three-game winning streak and are coming off a 68-44 loss to Lubbock Christian on Thursday night, falling to 3-6 at home this season.

Umi Otsuka scored 17 points and was 3 of 5 from 3-point range in the loss. She also dished out three assists, blocked a shot and had a steal for the Comets, who shot a season-low 26.2 percent from the field. Addy Self was the leading rebounder with eight boards, while Sheridan Kavanaugh pulled down six rebounds.

Otsuka leads the Comets with 15.3 points per game and is shooting 45.7 percent from the field, including 39.3 percent from beyond the arc. The junior from Tokyo also leads the team with 3.2 assists per game.

Addy Self is the second-leading scorer for UTD with 9.4 points per game and is the leading rebounder with 7.9 boards per outing. Self is second on the team with 2.8 assists per game.

UT Dallas is scoring 63.9 points per game and holding opponents to 60.2 points per game.

The Mustangs won their only previous meeting with UTD, 76-42, at D.L. Ligon Coliseum last season.

Midwestern State is back in action on Monday night as it visits UT Tyler. Tipoff at Louise Herrington Patriot Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
