LUBBOCK, Texas – Midwestern State is on the road to face No. 23-ranked Lubbock Christian on Tuesday night after suffering a 75-64 defeat at the hands of Oklahoma Christian on Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff at Rip Griffin Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
Midwestern State (5-12, 2-9) is 3-5 on the road this season after defeating Cameron on Thursday night, 92-87, as
Kerbie Cash scored 23 points and
Carisa Cortez added 19 for the Mustangs, who raced out to a 30-19 lead in the first quarter. Cash had her fourth double-double of the season, pulling down 10 of the 38 rebounds for MSU. Cortez finished with eight rebounds, while
Macie Upshaw grabbed six, and
Saylor Upshaw corralled five caroms.
Veonce Powell scored a season-high 16 points, hitting 4-of-6 shots from beyond the arc.
Ta'Leeyah Glynn scored double digits for the eighth time this season with 11 points, and
Da'Lonna Choice had four of the 11 steals for the Mustangs.
Oklahoma Christian scored 44 of their 75 points in the paint and went 19 of 30 at the free-throw line to complete a season sweep of the Mustangs. Taylor Jackson finished with 30 points and 19 rebounds in a dominating performance for the Eagles, who shot 48.1 percent from the field in a wire-to-wire victory. Cash finished with 23 points and nine rebounds for the Mustangs. It was the fourth time this season that Cash was one rebound shy of a double-double. Powell scored double digits in her third straight game with 11 points.
Cash is the leading scorer for the Mustangs with 15.9 points per game and also leads the team with 7.6 rebounds per contest. Cash has scored 20 or more points in eight games this season.
Glynn is the second leading scorer for the Stangs with 9.5 points per game and has scored double figures in eight games this season, including three of her last five outings.
Cash is third in the LSC in free-throw attempts and is shooting 75 percent at the foul line (81 of 108). Glynn is hitting 72.2 percent of her free throws (52 of 72), which is 13th in the conference. MSU is making the sixth most free throws in NCAA Division II with 17.3 per game and has the seventh most attempts with 24.1 per outing. The Mustangs' conversion rate of 71.7 percent is fifth best in the conference.
The Mustangs are scoring 64.6 points per game, which is seventh in the Lone Star Conference, and they are holding opponents to 65.6 points per game, which is 13th in the league.
Midwestern State is shooting 32.6 percent from the field and 25.9 from 3-point range and ranks 15th among LSC programs in both categories. The Mustangs are 14th in the league with 8.2 assists per game.
The Mustangs are third in the conference with 39.6 rebounds per game and lead the LSC with 16 offensive rebounds per game, which is 17th among NCAA Division II programs.
Macie Upshaw is pulling down 6.7 rebounds per game, which is second on the team behind Cash. Both Upshaw and Cash are grabbing nearly three offensive rebounds per game, and they are both among the top-10 offensive rebounders in the LSC.
Glynn and Cash are both getting two steals per game and are among the conference's top 10 in that category.
Midwestern State is second in the league and 29th in the nation with 12.2 steals per game, and the Mustangs are forcing the fourth-most turnovers in the LSC with 21.1 per game.
Lubbock Christian (16-4, 8-3) earned its 12th straight win over the Mustangs with a 73-62 victory at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Jan. 8. Kennedy Chappell hit 6-of-7 shots from the field and finished with 20 points for the Lady Chaps, who outscored the Mustangs in the paint 34-22 and shot 48.1 percent from the field. MSU was held to 29.3 percent shooting in a game that featured seven ties and 14 lead changes.
Midwestern State leads the all-time series, 23-16, but has not defeated Lubbock Christian since a 73-70 triumph in December of 2014. LCU has won all 10 encounters since joining the Lone Star Conference.
The Lady Chaps rebounded from a 55-45 loss at UT Tyler with a 73-47 victory over Cameron at Rip Griffin Center on Saturday afternoon. Lubbock Christian outscored Cameron 43–20 in the second half, including a decisive 24–12 third quarter in which the Lady Chaps shot 63.6 percent from the field and went a perfect 9-for-9 at the free-throw line.
Tia Johnson scored 10 of her team-high 14 point in the first quarter, and Mattie Dollar scored a career-high 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting. Kyndle Cunningham finished with eight points and a team-leading seven rebound. Chapppell had seven points, five rebounds and five assists in the victory as the Lady Chaps improved their home record to 6-1.
Chappell is leading the conference with four assists per game, and Martie McCoy is second with 3.5 helpers per contest.
Chappell is the sixth-leading scorer in the LSC with 15.9 points per game, and Meg Meekins in eighth in the league with 14.1 points per game. Meekins has the best 3-point percentage in the LSC at 39.8 (41 of 103).
The Lady Chaps hit 36.8 percent of their shots from beyond the arc, which is the best 3-point percentage in the LSC. LCU is third in the league in field goal percentage at 44 percent, and it has the seventh-best field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to 37.4 percent shooting.
Lubbock Christian scores the fourth-most points in the league with 67.7 points per game, and it boasts the fourth-best scoring defense in the league, holding opponents to 58.9 points per game.
Chappell is pulling down 5.8 rebounds per game, while Meekins and McCoy are both grabbing more than 4.5 boards per game. LCU is 13th in the conference with 33 rebounds per game, but it is sixth with 25.3 defensive boards per outing.
Steve Gomez is in his 22nd season as the head coach at Lubbock Christian and has won 79 percent of his games with an astounding record of 553-148. Gomez has won at least 21 games in all but three seasons at the helm.
Midwestern State visits UT Dallas on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. before traveling to UT Tyler on Feb. 9 to play a game rescheduled due to inclement weather on Jan. 24.
