UT Dallas looks to repeat last year's feat as it hosts No. 2-ranked MSU

DALLAS - - No. 2-ranked Midwestern State has a 24-game unbeaten streak as it visits UT Dallas, which was the last team to defeat the defending national champions. The Comets earned a 2-0 victory at Stang Park 357 days ago, and the Mustangs have not lost a match since that defeat. Kickoff at UTD Soccer Complex is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday night.

Midwestern State improved to 10-0-3 overall and 4-0-1 in conference play this season with a 4-1 win over Dallas Baptist at Stang Park on Wednesday night. 

Parker Plaxco scored twice, including once from the penalty spot.  Alan Rivera also scored on a PK, while Liam Kervick struck from distance as the Mustangs improved to 4-0-1 at home this season.

The Mustangs are 2-0-2 on the road with a 1-0 victory at St. Edward's and a 3-0 triumph at UT Tyler. 

Plaxco has scored nine goals in his last eight games for the Mustangs, including three game-winning goals. Plaxco, who has three multi-goal games this season, is the leading goal scorer in the Lone Star Conference and eighth in the nation with 10 goals this season.

Jose Ortiz is the second-leading goal scorer in the LSC with seven, including a four-goal outburst in the season-opening 5-0 win over Cal State East Bay in Richardson, Texas. Ortiz scored the game-winning goal against Simon Fraser. The senior transfer from SMU is 22nd in NCAA Division II among goal scorers.

Midwestern State is outscoring opponents 36-9 and its plus-27 goal differential is second in the nation. Only Southern New Hampshire has a greater differential at plus-35.

Ten Mustangs have scored goals this season. Rivera, Liam Kervick, Lawrence Doe Jr. and Juan David Valencia Vacca have scored three goals. Cooper Tea and Italo Rodriguez have all scored twice this season. Victor Hernandez III and Cristopher Guevara and have all found the back of the net once this season.

Cooper Tea and Ethan Krchnak lead the Mustangs with five assists. MSU is 10th in the nation with 27 assists, which is second most in the LSC.  Oscar Nunez has four assists. Davis Mays and Rivera have accounted for three assists.  Tanner Tea has two assists. Valencia, Hernandez, Skyler Krchnak and Eduardo Cerna each have one assist for the Stang Gang.

Midwestern State leads the league with 7.6 points per game, which is seventh in the nation, and the Mustangs are second in the LSC with 2.1 assists per game. 

Midwestern State is outshooting opponents 232-125, and the Mustangs are putting 41.4 percent of their shots on frame, while opponents are putting 44.8 percent of their shots on goal.

Morris has played 1,159 minutes and has a save percentage of .836 with a 0.70 goals-against average. Morris made a season-high six saves in a 6-1 win over Colorado Mesa earlier this season and also made six saves in a 3-0 win over Texas A&M International. The junior from Parker, Colorado, has made five saves twice this season. Morris has five clean sheets this season, most recently in a 3-0 win at UT Tyler as he made three saves. 

Morris is 20-0-3 since suffering a loss to UT Dallas last season, conceding two goals and making three saves in the loss last season.

UT Dallas earned its first win in seven meetings with Midwestern State as Osi Iyamah and Evan Pustejovsky scored 13 minutes apart in the second half. The Comets prevailed despite being outshot by the Stangs, 20-8. Ryder Claborn made six saves in the victory for UTD.

UT Dallas (7-1-4, 1-0-3) is unbeaten in its last nine games and is coming off its first win in conference play following three consecutive draws.

Luca Foschi scored his first goal of the season in the 78th minute, and Jose Diaz scored in his first game as a Comet, as UTD defeated Lubbock Christian, 2-0, at the LCU Soccer & Track Complex Wednesday night. Claborn made fives for his fifth shutout of the season, and the 12th of his career.

Avery Brazzell is the leading goal scorer for UTD with five and he has two assists. Brazzell leads the team with 12 points. Iyamah has four goals and one assist this season, but the junior from Allen, Texas, has not scored since a 2-1 win over Northeastern State on Sept. 10, but two of his three shots against LCU were on goal.

Callum Thompson has scored twice for the Comets, and 11 other players have scored one goal apiece this season. UTD is outscoring opponents, 22-9, and its plus-13 goal differential is third in the LSC. Seven different players have scored game-winning goals this season.

The Comets lead the conference and are 10th in the nation with 7.8 shots on goal per game, and they are the second-most accurate team with 53 percent of their total shots on frame, which is also 10th in NCAA Division II.
Midwestern State is on the road for a midweek match at West Texas A&M. Kickoff at The Pitch on Wednesday is scheduled for 7 p.m.
