Mustangs take final five points of fifth set to defeat Javelinas

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Midwestern State (12-9, 7-3) upended Texas A&M-Kingsville (15-6, 8-2) 3-2 on Friday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. The Mustangs won the final five points and hit .462 in the fifth set to knock off the Javelinas 25-18, 20-25, 25-18, 19-25, 15-10.

The Mustangs separated late in the first set, moving from an 18-16 lead to the finish with Aaliyah Toppin's service ace, kills from Isabella Dickens and Nyle Mathis and three TAMUK attack errors. Earlier, MSU opened with Toppin's kill from Macy Scheer and built a 5-1 lead as Dickens put down three consecutive kills, each assisted by Scheer. The Javelinas answered from an 11-7 deficit to move ahead 12-11 during Karrington Crawford's serve, but Mathis responded with a kill from Scheer and the Maroon & Gold moved back in front 14-12 on consecutive setting errors. After TAMUK tied the set at 14-14, Toppin's kill, another attack error and a Scheer-Dickens block pushed the Mustangs to an 18-15 edge before they closed out the set 25-18.

MSU answered an early 4-1 deficit with kills from Dickens, Aaliyah Toppin and Jaiden Wright, and Wright's kill on Macy Scheer's serve brought the set within 8-7. TAMUK kept the Mustangs from drawing even, but the Maroon & Gold continued to side out through Toppin, TaNia Penn and Dickens as Scheer distributed the attack. After falling behind 18-14, MSU got consecutive kills from Penn and Toppin to close to 18-16, then later stayed within reach on kills by Toppin and Dickens. Mathis fought off one set point with a kill from Scheer, but the Javelinas took the set 25-20.

The Mustangs took control of the third set with a 7-of-8 stretch that turned a 7-5 edge into a 14-6 advantage, with Mathis, Penn and Wright providing kills and Scheer adding a service ace. Earlier, after TAMUK opened at 3-1, Toppin answered with a kill, Scheer and Dickens teamed on two blocks, and Mathis put down two early kills as MSU moved ahead 7-4. The Javelinas later cut into the gap with four straight points to make it 15-11 and stayed within 18-15, but Mathis delivered a sideout kill and Scheer served five straight points, including kills by Penn, Wright and Mathis around a Mathis-Wright block. After TAMUK scored three points at set point, Penn closed the set with a kill from Scheer for a 25-18 MSU win.

The Mustangs erased a 12-6 deficit in the fourth set, tying it at 14-14 on Giselle Cazares' service ace, but TAMUK answered and took the set 25-19. Earlier, the Maroon & Gold moved ahead 4-2 behind two Toppin kills set by Scheer and a block involving Toppin and Dickens, before the Javelinas turned a 6-6 tie into a 12-6 lead. MSU's push back included a Wright-Penn block, kills from Toppin and Dickens, a Dickens block and Cazares' ace. After the tie, TAMUK scored three straight for a 17-14 lead, and the Mustangs got late kills from Mathis, Scheer and Penn before the visitors closed the set.

The Mustangs broke a 10-10 tie by scoring the final five points, with Toppin putting MSU ahead before Giselle Cazares served out the set. Earlier, the Maroon & Gold fell behind 3-1 but answered behind two Toppin kills, a Mathis kill and Toppin service ace to move in front 5-3, later holding a 6-4 edge after a TAMUK service error. The Javelinas pulled even multiple times, including at 8-8, 9-9 and 10-10, but the Mustangs responded each time with kills from Wright and Toppin. The final stretch included another Toppin kill, a Dickens kill, a TAMUK attack error and a Cazares ace as MSU won the fifth set 15-10.

Toppin led the Mustangs with 20 kills and 23.5 points, adding three service aces. Scheer finished with 55 assists, 12 digs, four block assists and one ace. Jenna Redding collected 28 digs and added four assists. Dickens recorded 12 kills, six total blocks and 15.5 points.

Midwestern State is 3-1 on its six-match homestand, which continues on Saturday with Texas A&M International visiting  D.L. Ligon Coliseum at 2 p.m.
