MSU follows big win over West Texas A&M with excursion to Oklahoma

EDMOND, Okla. - - Coming off a five-set win over West Texas A&M, Midwestern State is on the road this week to play Oklahoma Christian and Cameron. The Mustangs visit the Eagles at Payne Athletic Center on Friday night at 6 p.m. and then renew the Red River Rivalry at Aggie Gym on Saturday at 2 p.m.

For only the second time in program history, Midwestern State defeated West Texas A&M on Tuesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Nyle Mathis had four kills in the seven-point run that ended the fourth set, which the Mustangs won, 25-22, after the Lady Buffs used a four-point run to take a 22-18 lead. MSU won four of the last five points in the decisive fifth set to polish off its 3-2 (23-25, 25-22, 15-25, 25-22, 16-14) victory.

Midwestern State (7-8, 3-2) was led by Macy Scheer, who had 69 assists, 10 digs and two service aces. Jaiden Wright hit .400 with 23 kills on 45 swings. Jenna Redding had 20 of the Mustangs' 95 digs. Nylah Lewis had 14 digs while Remi Madison and Giselle Cazares each had 13 for the Mustangs. Isabella Dickens finished with 15 kills and had eight digs in the victory. Dickens and Wright were in on two of three blocks for the Mustangs. Aaliyah Toppin added 12 kills for the Mustangs, who hit .211 for the match.

Wright leads the team and is fifth in the Lone Star Conference with a hitting percentage of .339, while Dickens is 10th in the league with a .318 hitting percentage. Dickens is ninth in the league with 3.1 kills per set. MSU is hitting .209 as a team, which is sixth in the conference, and the Mustangs are third in the LSC with 13.2 kills per set.

Midwestern State is fourth in the conference with 12.1 assists per set. Macy Scheer is sixth in the league with 7.6 assists per set, and Maxime Pheasant is 18th in the LSC with 4.7 assists per set.

The Mustangs are only getting 1.1 blocks per set, which is 18th in the conference. Wright leads the team with 32 blocks, including six solo blocks.

Jenna Redding is 10th in the league with 3.75 digs per set, and she has the 11th most digs in the LSC with 210. Midwestern State is seventh in the league with 15.4 digs per set.

OKLAHOMA CHRISTIAN (8-7, 2-2)

Midwestern State is 5-5 in the all-time series with the Eagles and lost the last meeting less than a month ago in the LSC Challenge at Payne Athletic Center, 3-1. The Mustangs are 2-3 when visiting the Eagles and have dropped three of the last four meetings.

Oklahoma Christian hit .294, and Chloe Jones led the Eagles with a .462 hitting percentage, finishing with 13 of their 55 kills in their victory over MSU on Sept. 10. OC had 11 blocks, led by Lauren Cary and Kenzy Eyster, while Madison Remy and Jaiden Wright had the only block for the Mustangs.

 Mathis had 11 kills and hit .304, while Dickens had 11 kills and hit .148 in the loss at OC earlier this season. Wright hit a team-leading .412 with nine kills for the Mustangs, who hit .180 as a team.

The Eagles have won three of their last four matches and are coming off a 3-2 victory at UT Permian Basin on Saturday. 

Oklahoma Christian is seventh in the league with a hitting percentage of .209 and eighth with 12.7 kills per set. Leah Duncan leads the team with a .274 hitting percentage and Kenzy McArtor is hitting .269. Jones leads the team with three kills per set and is hitting .242.

Summer Van Meerveld is averaging nearly six assists per set, which is ninth in the conference. OC is fifth in the league with 12 assists per set. 

The Eagles are 12th in the conference with 1.6 blocks per set, and Lauren Cary leads the team with 0.9 blocks per set. 

Macey Nehring is 12th in the league with 3.7 digs for the Eagles, who are 11th in the LSC with 14.4 digs per set.

Jenna McClure is atop the conference with 0.53 aces per set, but the Eagles are ninth in the league with 1.6 aces per set.

CAMERON (1-14, 1-3)

Cameron defeated UT Permian Basin in five sets before dropping a five-set decision to No. 6-ranked Angelo State last week.  The Aggies fell to Southwestern Oklahoma State, 3-0, in Weatherford, Oklahoma on Tuesday night. Cameron hosts Lubbock Christian on Friday night before the Mustangs arrival on Saturday.

Midwestern State is 32-39 in the all-time series with the Aggies, but the Mustangs have won nine of the last 12 meetings, including a 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-12) victory at D.L. Ligon Coliseum last season. MSU is 10-22 at Cameron but won its last visit to Aggie Gym, 3-1 (20-25, 25-22, 25-13, 27-25).

Midwestern State hit .439 with 52 kills on 107 attacks in its win over the Aggies last season. Dickens had 15 kills and hit .560, while Wright hit .583 and finished with eight kills for the Mustangs, who had four blocks in the victory.

Cameron is 18th in the LSC with a hitting percentage of .109 and is 17th in the league with 9.4 kills per set. Caitlyn Cornell leads Cameron with a hitting percentage of .248. Maria Osorio is hitting .160 but leads the team with 2.8 kills per set and three points per set. Osorio and Taylor Silva lead the team in attacks, and Silva is averaging 1.45 kills per set.

Cameron is 17th in the conference with 8.8 assists per set, led by Sydney Walker, who has 4.85 assists per set for the Aggies.

Addison McClure leads the team with 3.5 digs per set, and the Aggies are eighth in the league with 15.35 digs per set.

Cornell leads Cameron with 27 blocks in 52 sets, and the Aggies are averaging 1.5 blocks per set as a team, which is 13th in the league.

Midwestern State opens a six-game homestand on Tuesday night with its final non-conference match against Southern Nazarene. First serve is at 6 p.m.
