Head coach Rich Renner breaks down the Mustangs as they pursue a Lone Star Conference championship.

Special teams' miscues put Midwestern State behind No. 7-ranked Western Colorado 14-0 in the opening seven minutes on Saturday night at Memorial Stadium, and a 21-point first quarter deficit was more than the Mustangs could overcome in a 38-13 loss to the Mountaineers in the home opener.

Jakolby Longino completed 27-of-49 passes for 302 yards with two touchdowns, including a 24-yard strike to Case Peacock. Longino completed passes to nine different receivers with Demonte Greene catching 11 passes for 98 yards.

Noah Bustard made eight tackles and recorded a sack, while Amani Pressley intercepted a pass for the Mustangs.

MSU finished non-conference play with a 0-2 record, but the Mustangs have two weeks to prepare for the conference opener against Eastern New Mexico.

The Greyhounds will be at Memorial Stadium for Family Weekend on Sept. 20, and kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
