WICHITA FALLS, Texas – After two impressive victories to close out the non-conference schedule, No. 18-ranked Midwestern State opens up Lone Star Conference play against St. Edward's at Stang Park on Wednesday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Midwestern State (4-1-3) rallied from a 2-0 deficit as
Parker Plaxco scored four second-half goals, and the Mustangs scored a 4-2 victory over Northwest Nazarene at Toyota Soccer Center on Thursday. Two days later,
Jake Morris made six saves as MSU shut out Western Oregon, 2-0.
Alan Rivera and
Liam Kervick scored goals in the victory, and Plaxco had an assist for the Mustangs.
Plaxco was named the LSC Offensive Player of the Week for his exploits, and Morris was selected as the LSC Goalkeeper of the Week.
Plaxco is tied for the conference lead with six goals this season and leads the league with 14 points.
The Mustangs are 1-1-1 at home this season and 19-3-2 when hosting St. Edward's. Midwestern State leads the all-time series with the Hilltoppers, 36-7-5, and has won 10 of the last 13 meetings, including a 3-1 victory in the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament semifinals last November.
St. Edward's handed MSU one of the most lopsided defeats in program history in their regular season meeting at Lewis-Chen Family Field last season.
The Hilltoppers scored three goals in a 63-second span of the first half and defeated the Mustangs 5-0, snapping a seven-match losing streak in the series.
St. Edward's (2-3-2) arrives in Wichita Falls on a three-match skid after suffering a 2-1 loss at Seattle Pacific on Friday. The Hilltoppers played down a man for more than 70 minutes after goalkeeper Angel Ramirez was shown a red card for a foul outside the box.
Christian Mezas scored in the 60th minute with a blast off the crossbar from 25 yards out as St. Edward's pulled even with the Falcons, 1-1. Seattle Pacific scored in the 80th minute off a free kick to secure the victory.
The Hilltoppers are led by Filip Adamski, who has scored four goals, while Shunji Watanabe has three goals and an assist for St. Edward's. Mezas has scored twice while Irvin Abarca, Matthew Devaney, Armando Donjuan and Easton Jones have all netted one goal this season.
Kaleo Perez-Francis has made three starts with four appearances and is 1-2-1 for St. Edwards's with a goals-against average of 2.18 and a save percentage of .556. Ramirez is 1-1-1 in his four starts and has the only clean sheet for the Hilltoppers. Ramirez has a 1.50 goals-against average and a save percentage of .667.
St Edward's, which has scored 13 goals and conceded 13 goals this season, is 0-3-0 on the road and has been outscored away from home, 7-3.
Midwestern State is back on the road this weekend to face Texas A&M International at Dustdevil Soccer Field in Laredo. Kickoff is slated for Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
