Head coach Rich Renner breaks down the Mustangs as they pursue a Lone Star Conference championship.

Midwestern State opened the 2025 campaign on the road at Missouri Southern, and quarterback Jakolby Longino completed 31-of-38 passes for 359 yards, including a 75-yard strike to Demonte Greene on a flea flicker on the first play from scrimmage, but the Mustangs fell to the Lions, 33-19. Midwestern State finished the night with 447 yards of total offense, but two fumbles proved costly.   Missouri Southern was able to rush for 285 yards on 41 carries and finished with 449 yards of total offense. The Mustangs turn their attention to Western Colorado, which defeated MSU last season in Gunnison, 38-33, and the Mountaineers are coming off a 45-28 win over West Texas A&M. Western Colorado rushed for 251 yards on 45 carries in their victory over the Buffaloes. The Mountaineers had the football for nearly 40 minutes and scored on all six trips into the red zone in their season opener.
