Mustangs score early, fend off Rattlers in 1-0 victory

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Midwestern State edged St. Mary's (TX) 1-0  in non-conference clash on Wednesday night at Stang Park. The decisive goal came in the first half, with MSU capitalizing on one of its 20 shots. The home team's defense remained steadfast throughout, with their goalkeeper making six key saves to secure the shutout.

The first half commenced with Midwestern State (2-1-2) taking an early lead as Jaime Villagomez scored in the 8th minute, assisted by Skyler Krchnak. The Mustangs maintained an offensive push throughout, recording multiple shot attempts and forcing several corner kicks, with Liam Pritchard and Cristopher Guevara also contributing shots on goal. Goalkeeper Daniel Robles made crucial saves, notably stopping a shot from St. Mary's (1-1-2) Gael Gallegos in the 34th minute, securing a 1-0 advantage at halftime. This match marked another chapter in Midwestern State has won its last six meetings with the Rattlers and holds an impressive 21-1-0 record when hosting their rivals. 

The second half commenced with MSU maintaining their defensive strength, highlighted by goalkeeper Robles' critical saves in the 50th and 70th minutes, keeping St. Mary's at bay. Parker Plaxco and Jarrod McKechnie led the offensive charge for the Maroon & Gold, each recording multiple shots, including a flurry of attempts between the 59th and 74th minutes. Despite the Mustangs' consistent pressure and numerous attempts, the match concluded without any additional goals, securing a 1-0 victory for the home team. This victory further solidifies MSU's dominance in the all-time series, which they lead 40-5-0.
