WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State is seeking its first home win of the season as it completes a three-match homestand with a non-conference skirmish against St. Mary's on Wednesday night. Kickoff at Stang Park is slated for 7 p.m.
Midwestern State (1-1-2) rallied from a 3-0 deficit to tie Newman in the home opener last week. Northeastern State stunned the Mustangs two nights later with a 1-0 victory at Stang Park.
The Mustangs were unbeaten in 19 consecutive home regular season matches prior to the loss on Thursday night. The last regular season defeat at Stang Park was to West Texas A&M in the 2022 regular season finale.
Junior midfielder Eduardo Matos scored in the 16th minute following a corner kick to give Northeastern State a lead it would never relinquish. Junior goalkeeper Cameron McColloch made three saves in the 1-0 triumph for the RiverHawks.
Cooper Tea put two shots on goal, and
Sune Espevoll placed one shot on frame for the Mustangs.
Daniel Robles made his first start in goal this season, and the senior from Tyler, Texas, made two saves in defeat.
Parker Plaxco is leading MSU in points this season with five — two goals and an assist.
Davis Mays,
Liam Pritchard and Tea have all scored goals this season. Pritchard and Mays each have a goal and an assist for the for the Mustangs.
St. Mary's arrives in Wichita Falls with a 1-0-2 record. The Rattlers opened the season against three ranked opponents and played No. 3-ranked Colorado State-Pueblo to a scoreless draw in the season opener at Pueblo.
Gael Gallegos scored in the 24th minute at UCCS as St. Mary's earned a 1-0 victory at Mountain Lion Stadium.
In its home opener on Saturday, the Rattlers settled for a 1-1 draw with No. 9-ranked Fort Lewis after Ryan Guillame struck for a goal in the 24th minute. Alessio Andreottola scored the equalizer for the Skyhawks in the 68th minute.
Goalkeeper Johnny Thurbin has allowed one goal and made nine saves in three matches for St. Mary's, and the senior from England has posted two clean sheets.
Thurbin was the keeper in all three matches against Midwestern State last season, and the Mustangs came away victorious on each occasion, including a 2-1 victory in the LSC Tournament Championship at Sigma Beta Chi Field in San Antonio.
The Mustangs visited St. Mary's for a non-conference clash last September and came away with a 2-0 victory as
Cooper Tea scored in the 18th minute.
When the two sides met in the regular season finale at Stang Park, Midwestern State erupted with three goals in the final 11 minutes to defeat the Rattlers, 3-1.
Midwestern State has won its last five meetings with St. Mary's and leads the all-time series, 39-5-0.
MSU won the first 30 encounters before St. Mary's earned a 2-0 win at home in 2019. Later that year, St. Mary's scored its first and only victory at Stang Park with a 3-2 victory in overtime. The Mustangs are 20-1-0 when hosting the Rattlers, who first visited Wichita Falls in 1979 and suffered a 2-0 defeat.
The Mustangs travel to Bethany, Oklahoma, on Saturday to face Southern Nazarene in a 7 p.m. match at Wanda Rhodes Soccer Complex.
