Midwestern State beats Bethel in straight sets, improves to 4-2

NEWTON, Kansas – Midwestern State breezed to a straight-set victory over Bethel College on Saturday afternoon at Thresher Gym, 25-17, 25-21, 25-10.

Midwestern State improved to 4-2 with the victory and rebounded from two narrow defeats in the Tiger Classic on Friday in Hays, Kansas. 

Bethel, a member of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, is an NAIA program and was coming off straight-set wins over Northwestern Oklahoma State and New Mexico Highlands at the Tiger Classic. The Threshers played the match against MSU as an exhibition and is 9-7 this season.

Midwestern State hit .301 in the victory and did not hit below .256 in any of the three sets. The Mustangs opened the match hitting .385 with 11 kills on 26 attacks and had just one error in the opening frame. 

For the match, MSU only had seven attack errors while Bethel finished with 20 and hit just .114, including .029 in the final set.

Trinity Vinzant, who hit .280 for the match, led the Mustangs with 12.5 points, finishing with nine kills and three aces. She also had a block assist and led the team with nine digs.

Isabella Dickens hit .467 with eight kills on 15 swings, and she had two block assists for the Mustangs.

Jaiden Wright had eight kills on 16 attacks and did not have an error in the match. 

Arriana Fields accounted for nine points with eight kills and hit .318 in the victory.

Midwestern State delivered 10 aces, led by Vinzant and Giselle Cazares, who each had three service aces.

Alayna Guerrero filled the stat sheet with 32 assists, two block assists, two service aces and five digs for the Mustangs.

Midwestern State will play two matches in the Lone Star Challenge at Steinke Center in Kingsville. The Mustangs face Texas A&M International on Friday at 6 p.m. before battling Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
