AMARILLO, Texas -- Midwestern State delivered a supreme effort to claim its first NCAA Division II West Region championship Wednesday at the Tascosa Golf Club's La Paloma Course.
The Mustangs combined for a school record low team total of 274 to erase a second-round tournament leading Dallas Baptist's 13-stroke lead. Then, MSU beat the Patriots in a one-hole playoff to claim the team title.
Midwestern State makes its first appearance in the NCAA Division II Championships on May 13-17 at the Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nevada.
Senior
Brecklyn Flanagan was sensational in the final round, carding seven birdies on the way to a career-low, 5-under 66 to push her way into a tie at the top of the leader board with West Texas A&M senior Anna Nomrowski.
Flanagan, who logged scores of 76, 74, and 66 for a 3-over total of 216, lost on a one-hole tiebreaker. Nomrowski claimed individual medalist honors with scores of 77, 70, and 69.
Fellow senior
Makenna Henry continued her stellar play this spring by logging a par of even-par 71s after opening tournament play with a 5-over 76 to tie for third with a 54-hole, 5-over total of 218.
Junior
Alli Reily notched three countable scores, including a 77 and 76 before finding her groove for a 2-under 69 in the final round to work into a tie for 16th with a 9-over total of 222.
Sophomore
Madison Wert saved her best for last with a career-low, 3-under 68 in the final round which included six birdies. The Roanoke, Texas, native zoomed up 36 spots to finish tied for 33rd after marking scores of 84 and 73 in the first two rounds for a 12-over total of 225.
Freshman
Mary Kerr also contributed a strong drop score with a 1-over 72 in the final round.
Midwestern State's historic 10-under total of 274 in the final round is the lowest by four strokes in program history. The Mustangs previously fired a 6-under 282 at the DBU Women's Classic in 2023. It was also their first sub-par round in program history.
The Mustangs will make their first NCAA Division II national appearance as a team, and first since Emily Brennan placed 29th as an individual in 2018. Brenna Moore claimed the school's lone varsity national championship in 2015 when she claimed individual medalist honors at The Meadows Golf Club in Michigan.
MSU also claimed the fourth women's regional title in school history, joining softball (2010, 2011) and cross country (2011). It is the first regional championship for the school since men's soccer advanced to the national quarterfinals in 2017.
