No. 3-ranked Mustangs seek 13th straight win

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- – No. 3-ranked Midwestern State pursues a 13th consecutive victory as it hosts No. 29-ranked UT Tyler on Thursday at 10 a.m.

Dallas Baptist, ranked No. 23 in the nation, visits the Mustangs on Friday. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m.

Midwestern State is 7-0 in the Lone Star Conference and 9-1 this season when playing teams ranked among the top-50 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The Mustangs are also 5-0 as the host this spring.

Midwestern State notched its 12th consecutive win on Saturday as it defeated Western New Mexico in Silver City, 7-0. The Mustangs did not lose a set on its recent road trip as they also slayed Sul Ross State, 7-0.

UT Tyler is still seeking its first-ever win over the Mustangs. Last year, Midwestern State defeated the Patriots at MSU Tennis Center last year, 6-1, with the Patriots only point coming at No. 6 singles.

This year, the Patriots arrive in Wichita Falls with a 14-7 overall record and a 5-1 mark in the LSC. UT Tyler rebounded from a 4-3 loss to No. 44-ranked St. Mary's by defeating No. 24-ranked Dallas Baptist at Summers Tennis Center last week.

Six of the Patriots' seven losses have come to teams ranked in the ITA top-50, but UT Tyler also has four wins against nationally ranked foes.

Jessica Binzari, ranked No. 5 in women's singles, earned an impressive victory at No. 1 singles against the Patriots last season as she beat No. 11-ranked Muskan Gupta in a match tiebreak, 4-6, 6-3, 10-7. Binzari is 13-3 this season and boasts a 3-0 record against nationally ranked opponents.

Binzari and Anda Ghinga comprise the No. 14-ranked doubles pairing, and they have won their last four doubles matches.

Ghinga owns the school record with 65 victories in singles over her career at MSU, and the senior from Romania has won her last nine matches, improving to 15-2 for the season. Ghinga is 7-0 in conference play this spring.

Sofia Giraldo is ranked No. 21 in the nation in singles and has been unbeatable since losing a match tiebreak to Alva Norberg of Northwest Missouri on March 7. Since then, the sophomore from Colombia has won 16 consecutive sets. She has won five sets at love, including a pair of 6-0, 6-0 victories. She has won four other sets during the streak in seven games. Giraldo has only lost 28 of 125 games since March 9. She has not lost more than five games in a match during the month of April.

Hannah Yip is 10-4 at No. 2 singles and has won four of her last five matches for the Mustangs. Yip is 5-2 in conference play. The senior from Malaysia is coming off a 6-3, 6-2 victory over An Montero-Villegas of Western New Mexico.

Yip and Camila Garcia are 10-5 in doubles this season with eight wins in their last 10 matches. The duo is 6-1 in conference play.

Sydney Williams is playing some scintillating tennis in her senior season at Midwestern State. The native of Austin, Texas, has won six straight singles matches and is 3-0 in conference play with a 7-2 record overall.

In doubles, Williams and Sarah Mazaraki have won nine consecutive matches in the No. 3 position, and the duo is 13-2 this season.

Midwestern State is 75-22 (.773) in singles this season and 39-13 (.750) in doubles matches.

Yona Bancarel leads UT Tyler with a 3-1 record at No. 1 singles following a 4-6, 7-5, 10-5 victory over Selina Wu of St. Mary's on Thursday.

Paula Catellanos boasts the best record for the Patriots at 11-1, but she is coming off her first loss of the season. Paula Garrote of St. Mary's upended Castellanos at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-4.

Natalia Gorzny is No. 48 in the ITA rankings with a 10-2 record in dual matches. Gorzny is 6-1 at No. 2 singles following a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Janel Ospanova of St. Mary's.

The Patriots are winning 59 percent of their singles matches and 59 percent of their doubles matches this season.

Dallas Baptist follows UT Tyler into MSU Tennis Center for a dual match on Friday. The DBU Patriots are visiting Cameron a day before facing the Mustangs.

Dallas Baptist is 16-3 overall but all three losses have come against conference opponents that were nationally ranked. The Patriots were edged, 4-3, on the road at No. 29 UT Tyler and at home against No. 44-ranked St. Mary's last weekend. No. 49-ranked Texas A&M-Kingsville defeated DBU 4-3, last month in South Texas.

Emily Buchanan is 17-0 for Dallas Baptist this season. The sophomore from Jackson, Mississippi, has played primarily at No. 5 singles, where she is 13-0 for the Patriots. DBU has won all 16 of its matches in the No. 5 spot this year.

Andrea Delgado has posted an 11-1 record for the Patriots and has won nine of 10 matches at No. 6 singles. DBU is 13-1 in completed matches at No. 6 singles.

Isabella Arana Rios has led the DBU Patriots to a 17-2 record at No. 4 singles. Rios is 13-2 in that position this season.

DBU is winning 76 percent of its singles matches overall but is 12-7 (.632) in conference play. The Patriots are 7-3 (.700) against LSC foes in doubles, and DBU is 39-14 (.736) in doubles.

Midwestern State completes the regular season on April 26 as it hosts St. Mary's before the LSC Championships get underway on May 1 in Arlington, Texas.
