ALPINE, Texas -- – Midwestern State blew away Sul Ross State in the first-ever Lone Star Conference meeting on Friday. The Mustangs did not lose a game in five singles matches on their way to a 7-0 shellacking of the Lobos.
Sul Ross State defaulted No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles as Midwestern State improved to 10-4 with a 2-2 conference record.
The Mustangs took the opening point with a pair of 6-2 victories in doubles.
Bruno Sanchez and
Justin Van Amerongen defeated Diego Rodriguez and Sebastian Rodriguez at No. 1 doubles. 6-2.
Juan David Duque and
Killian Guillou also cruised to a 6-2 victory over Joseph Rangel and Devin Winter at No. 2 doubles.
No. 13-ranked
Filip Vacula overwhelmed Diego Rodriguez at No. 1 singles en route to a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Vacula improved to 7-5 for the Mustangs.
No. 24-ranked Sanchez had an easy time dismissing Sebastian Rodriguez at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0, and celebrated his third consecutive in the LSC.
Filip Kamara put a two-match skid in the rear-view mirror with his 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Winter at No. 3 singles and improved to 8-4 for the season, earning his first win in three LSC matches this spring.
Jose Marquez pasted Joseph Rangel at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-0, and improved his season record to 6-4. The junior from Mexico has won four of his last six matches for the Mustangs and is 6-4 this season.
Killian Guillou played singles for the first time since March 7 and barely got a work out during a 6-0, 6-0 win over Gavin Leon at No. 5 singles. Guillou is 3-1 in a season that has been interrupted by injury.
The Mustangs visit Western New Mexico on Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. at WNMU Tennis Courts in Silver City.
