Mustangs host Northwest Missouri State to begin homestand

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 9-ranked Midwestern State is hosting three dual matches at MSU Tennis Center this week. Northwest Missouri State is tangling with the Stangs at 2 p.m. on Friday. Newman squares off with MSU on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Arkansas-Fort Smith faces Midwestern State on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Mustangs are 4-2 to start the season, and the two losses have come against highly ranked opponents. No. 1-ranked West Florida defeated MSU at the UT Tyler Invitational this past weekend, and the other loss came against No. 3-ranked Washburn on Feb. 8.

Freshman Filip Vacula of the Czech Republic is ranked No. 18 among NCAA Division II singles players with an 11-6 record to start his collegiate career, including results from the fall campaign. During the dual-match season, Vacula is 2-1 against top-10 opponents, and he defeated No. 23-ranked Eita Ishikawa of West Alabama, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, in his last match at the UT Tyler Invitational.

Junior Juan David Duque is 9-3, including the results from his matches during the fall, and is ranked No. 28 in singles. The Colombian defeated Vilislav Bonev of West Alabama in his last match, 6-4, 6-3, and clinched the 4-2 victory for Midwestern State. Duque also has a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Liam Sunkel of Southern Methodist in a dual-match exhibition in January.

Bruno Sanchez is ranked No. 46 in singles following a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2) victory over Jacob Tapia of West Alabama. The sophomore from Spain is 9-9 this season, including matches played during the fall.

Sanchez and Justin Van Amerongen are ranked No. 31 in doubles with a 7-2 record as a pairing, including a 6-4 victory over Albin Ekenros and Miguel Cabrera of top-ranked West Florida at the UT Tyler Invitational this past weekend.

Vacula and Stephen Slocombe are ranked No. 37 doubles with a 3-5 record as a duo, including a 6-3 victory over Sebastian Rondon and Diego Duran at No. 1 doubles against West Florida.

Northwest Missouri State is 3-2 in dual matches this season and is coming off back-to-back 4-3 losses to Drury in Springfield, Missouri, and UMSL in St. Louis.

The Bearcats are led by No. 39-ranked Dominik Wijntjes, who has posted a 5-0 record in his dual matches this season. Wijntjes is 4-0 at No. 2 singles and 1-0 at No. 1 singles.

Newman will play at Cameron on Friday before facing the Mustangs at MSU Tennis Center on Saturday. The Jets are coming off a 4-3 win over Augustana in the MIAA season opener.

Midwestern State is 5-0 in the all-time series with Newman, including a 7-0 victory in Kearney, Nebraska, two years ago.

Former conference rival Arkansas-Fort Smith visits MSU on Sunday. The Lions have never beaten the Mustangs in 15 previous encounters. Last year, Midwestern State earned a 5-2 victory in Fort Smith.

UAFS is playing UT Tyler and Cameron before facing the Mustangs.

Eduardo Bribiesca is 5-1 with a three-match winning streak at No. 1 singles for the Lions, and Juan Rosello won his first five singles matches with three wins at No. 2 singles and two victories at No. 3 singles.

The Lions are 5-13 in doubles this season.

Midwestern State is hosting Southwest Baptist on Tuesday at 2 p.m. before welcoming UT Dallas to MSU Tennis Center on Thursday before opening conference play against Cameron at home on Saturday.
