Mustangs bow out to No. 4 Dallas Baptist in South Central Region semifinals

DALLAS -- Midwestern State won is first postseason game in 10 seasons by blowing out St. Edward's on Saturday night.

But facing Dallas Baptist's relentless full-court pressure proved to be too much in the NCAA Division II South Central semifinals Saturday night at Burg Center.

The No. 4-ranked Patriots scored the last 10 points of the first half and enjoyed an extended 36-11 extended run through the middle of the second half to rout MSU 80-54.

DBU (32-4) advanced to face No. 7-ranked Colorado School of Mines in its first NCAA Division II South Central Regional final Tuesday night at the Burg Center. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

The Mustangs struggled in all facets against Dallas Baptist's unforgiving pressure.

After burying a school record 23 3-pointers in the 102-72 win over the Hilltoppers on Saturday, MSU connected on just four triples on 22 attempts.

DBU also held the Mustangs to a season low in points with the previous low coming in an 80-60 loss at Colorado State-Pueblo on November 10.

The Patriots capitalized by turning MSU's season-high 26 turnovers into 29 points.

The Mustangs were stingy with the ball throughout much of the season, committing more than 13 turnovers just twice all season. MSU did make 21 miscues against DBU and had 17 turnovers at St. Mary's – both games in December.

Senior forward Will Shepherd led the Mustangs with 11 points. He also grabbed six rebounds and blocked four shots. It was the first time in 16 games that the Mustangs lost with Shepherd scoring at least 10 points.

Senior guard Pierre Sanders scored seven points and dished out four assists. The Hutto, Texas, native closed his career as MSU's all-time leader with 469 assists. Sanders also made his 112th career start Saturday night – the most in school history.

Senior forward Cameron Kahn needed just 13 minutes on the floor to pace Dallas Baptist with 14 points, while Xavion Brown and Drew Calderon added 12 points each.

Midwestern State closes the 2024-25 campaign with a 23-8 record.
