Slocombe, Vacula deliver big doubles win in 6-1 loss to No. 2 West Florida

TYLER, Texas -- Midwestern State's Stephen Slocombe and Filip Vacula delivered a huge win at No. 1 doubles Saturday afternoon against West Florida in the UT Tyler Invitational.

But it wasn't enough for Mustangs to overtake the No. 2-ranked Argonauts, who claimed wins in all six singles matches to roll to a 6-1 victory.

West Florida improved to 10-0 on the season, while the Mustangs fell to 3-2.

MSU closes play at the invitational Sunday morning against West Alabama. First serve is set for 11 a.m.

Slocombe and Vacula combined for their first win over a nationally-ranked opponent by beating No. 2-rated Diego Duran and Sebastian Rondon, 6-3, to clinch the doubles point for the Mustangs at the No. 1 flight.

Senior Justin Van Amerongen and sophomore Bruno Sanchez were first off the courts with a 6-4 win over West Florida's Miguel Cabrera and Albin Ekenros at No. 2.

West Florida rolled to straight-set wins at five of the six singles flights with MSU junior Jose Marquez pushing Duran to split sets before falling, 6-4, 3-6, 6-0.
