Defensive effort leads Midwestern State past Angelo State, 74-57

WICHITA FALLS, TX --  Midwestern State held Angelo State to 2-of-21 shooting from 3-point range and defeated the Rams, 74-57, at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.

Midwestern State extended its season-long winning streak to five games and improved to 19-5 for the season with a 14-4 conference record.

Mason Gibson scored 26 points on 9-of-12 shooting and hit 3-of-5 shots from 3-point range. Pierre Sanders, one of seven seniors recognized before tip-off for his contribution to Midwestern State, scored 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting and dished out eight assists in the victory.

The Mustangs shot 55.1 percent (27-of -49) from the field, including 11-of-25 (44 percent) from 3-point range, and held Angelo State to 38.1 percent shooting from the field. 


How It Happened

After jumping out to a 7-5 advantage, Midwestern State went on a 10-0 run with 15:33 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Gibson, to increase its lead to 17-5. The Mustangs then added 12 points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 44-20 advantage. Midwestern State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down eight shots to account for 24 of its 44 points.

Midwestern State kept its lead intact before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Gibson's three, to grow the lead to 72-53 with 2:25 to go in the contest. The Rams narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Mustangs still cruised the rest of the way for the 74-57 win. Midwestern State capitalized on seven Angelo State turnovers in the period, collecting nine points off those turnovers.

» Pierre Sanders, Will Shepherd, Noah McDavid, Bakari LaStrap, Jonathan Jackson, Matija Svetozarevic and Reggie Hill were recognized during Senior Day ceremonies before the opening tip-off.
