WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Midwestern State (16-9, 9-7) defeated UT Permian Basin (9-16, 7-8) in straight sets on Saturday evening at D.L. Ligon Coliseum, winning 25-16, 25-16, 25-10. The Mustangs recorded an impressive .321 hitting percentage, highlighted by 46 kills over the three sets. Following the final home match of the season, the Mustangs honored their senior class.
Midwestern State opened the first set with a strong showing, quickly establishing a 3-0 lead. The momentum continued with a service ace from the team and a block by
Arrianna Fields and
Jaiden Wright.
Trinity Vinzant was instrumental in the offensive push, contributing multiple kills with assists from
Alayna Guerrero.
As the set progressed, the Mustangs' defense held firm, recording blocks and taking advantage of errors by UTPB. A key sequence saw Vinzant and Fields lead a scoring drive that bolstered the home team's lead. Despite a brief rally by the Falcons, MSU maintained control.
The set concluded with a decisive run, highlighted by kills from Vinzant and service aces, closing the set at 25-16 in favor of Maroon & Gold. The home team's balanced attack and solid defense set the tone for this opening set.
MSU began the second set with a quick start, securing the first three points, including a kill by
Jaiden Wright assisted by Guerrero. The team extended its lead to 3-0 before UTPB responded. Despite some back-and-forth play, MSU maintained the edge with a strong offensive showing from Fields and
Isabella Dickens, leading 6-5.
Vinzant powered a significant run for MSU, capturing five consecutive points and extending the lead to 14-8. Consistent assists from Guerrero facilitated multiple kills from Vinzant, creating a decisive momentum shift. MSU capitalized on the Falcons' errors, increasing their advantage to 17-9.
Closing the set, Maroon & Gold maintained control, finishing strong with contributions from
Demi Stauffenberg and Wright. The team secured the set 25-16 with a final kill by Wright, assisted by Guerrero, ensuring a commanding finish.
The Mustangs began the third set by capitalizing on a service error from UTPB and securing an early advantage. A series of precise assists from Guerrero resulted in effective kills by Wright, Stauffenberg, and Vinzant, steadily building a lead. MSU continued to extend their margin with a strong offensive showing, including a service ace from Vinzant that increased the gap.
As the set progressed, MSU maintained control through consistent scoring and defensive pressure. The team benefitted from opponent errors, while Stauffenberg and Dickens contributed vital points to sustain their momentum. The set concluded with a decisive kill by Vinzant, securing a 25-10 victory in the set for the Mustangs.
Vinzant led the Mustangs with 13 kills, maintaining a perfect record of no errors on 26 attempts, and added two aces for a total of 15 points. Guerrero contributed significantly with 32 assists and a team-high 21 digs, showcasing her versatility on the court. Guererro has more than 1,000 assists this season for the Mustangs. Stauffenberg was active defensively with 15 digs and also added eight kills to her performance. Fields contributed nine kills and was effective at the net with three block assists.
Looking ahead, the Mustangs will face Lubbock Christian on Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. CT at Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock, Texas.
