Midwestern State visits Central Oklahoma for its first road game of the season

EDMOND, Oklahoma – Midwestern State makes its first road trip of the season as it travels to Central Oklahoma for a non-conference game on Thursday evening. Tipoff at Hamilton Fieldhouse is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Midwestern State (1-0) opened the season with an 82-33 trouncing of UNT-Dallas at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Sunday afternoon.

Ta'Leeyah Glenn led all scorers with 18 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field and was one of four players to finish in double digits for the Mustangs, who shot 41 percent from the field and outrebounded the Trailblazers, 45-37.

Kerbie Cash was 4-of-6 and scored 12 points while pulling down five rebounds, but the sophomore was assessed a flagrant 2 foul in the third quarter and will be unavailable for the game against the Bronchos.

Veonce Powell finished with 10 points and five assists in her MSU debut.

Aniya Williams, who missed almost all of last season with an injury, pulled down six rebounds, including three offensive boards, and she scored six points.

Caelyn Williams was the leading rebounder for the Mustangs with eight rebounds, and Carisa Cortez scored 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting in the victory.

Central Oklahoma (0-2) won eight of its last 12 meetings with MSU and leads the all-time series, 20-19.

UCO defeated the Mustangs in Wichita Falls last year, 58-52, holding Midwestern State to 22.6 percent shooting from the field.

Korie Allensworth and Jordan Turner each had a double-double for the Bronchos last season. Turner had 13 points and 15 rebounds, while Allensworth also had 13 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. UCO outrebounded the Mustangs, 53-51.

Cash had 10 points and 10 rebounds in 24 minutes for Midwestern State, while Carisa Cortez was 4-of-7 from the field and scored 12 points in defeat.

Midwestern State is 5-10 when visiting Central Oklahoma, which is starting its season with a five-game homestand.

The Bronchos shot just 29.5 percent from the field in a 66-51 season-opening loss to Southwest Minnesota. The following day, UCO took a 59-56 lead with 2:24 to play in the game, but St. Cloud State scored the final five points of the game to win 61-59.

Nykaiya Dillard is the leading scorer for UCO with 15 points per game, and Hailey Harbour is the leading rebounder with six boards per game.  Dillard also has seven of the 16 steals for the Bronchos through their first two games.

Central Oklahoma was picked 12th in both the MIAA Preseason Coaches' Poll and the league's media poll. The Bronchos have three players back from last year's team and are under the direction of first-year head coach Hannah Moeller.

Moeller spent the previous nine seasons as head coach at Mid-America Christian in Oklahoma City. She came to UCO with a career record of 305-102, surpassing the 20-win mark in each of her eight full seasons. The Evangels were 9-3 in a COVID-shortened campaign.

Midwestern State returns home on Tuesday night to face Southeastern Oklahoma State. Tipoff at D.L. Ligon Coliseum is scheduled for 6 p.m.
