SILVER CITY, New Mexico – Midwestern State wraps up the regular season on Saturday afternoon at Western New Mexico for the "Battle of the Mustangs." Kickoff at Ben Altamirano Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Midwestern State (2-8, 2-6) is hoping to end a four-game losing streak and finish the season on a positive note. The Mustangs only road win this season was a 69-23 triumph at Sul Ross State on Oct. 11.
Junior quarterback
Sean Jastrab completed 30-of-56 passes for 411 yards and five touchdowns, but Midwestern State lost its home finale last week to West Texas A&M, 56-42, as the Buffaloes piled up 651 yards of total offense.
The Mustangs are eighth in the conference and 153rd among NCAA Division II programs in total defense, allowing 486 yards per game. MSU is allowing 40.2 points per game, which is eighth in the league and 148th in the nation.
Linebacker
Noah Bustard is leading the Mustangs with 67 tackles, including 31 solo stops this season. Kamrin Devault leads the team with four sacks, and
Oliver Jack has 3.5 sacks.
Hornel Cloubou, Devault and Jack each have 4.5 tackles for loss this season.
Midwestern State has recovered seven fumbles and intercepted eight passes this season. The Mustangs are plus-2 in turnover ratio this season.
Mustangs are scoring 26 points per game as the offense is passing for 278 yards and rushing for 113 yards per game.
Five Midwestern State quarterbacks have combined to complete 58 percent of their passes for 2,780 yards and 22 touchdowns.
Junior wide receiver Demonte Green leads the conference with 101 all-purpose yards per game this season. He is also second in the conference with 78 yards receiving per game, and he has caught the fourth-most touchdown passes in the LSC this season with seven.
Greene has returned kicks for 229 yards, but is second on the team behind
Cedonyae Lott, who is second in the conference with 429 yards on kick returns.
Kohen Maroney is converting 73 percent of his field goal attempts for the Mustangs, making 8 of 11 field goals overall, including a season-long 50-yard field goal against Central Washington.
Midwestern State is 8-3 in its all-time series with Western New Mexico and has won the last two meetings, which were both at Memorial Stadium. The Mustangs erupted for 24 points in the fourth quarter last season and defeated WNMU, 52-24.
The last time MSU visited Silver City, the Western Mustangs prevailed in overtime, 30-27, ending a six-game winning streak in the series.
Western New Mexico (2-8, 1-7) is 2-3 at home this season but enters the regular season finale with a three-game losing streak after suffering a 64-13 defeat at the hands of Texas A&M-Kingsville. The Western Mustangs have allowed at least 59 points in each of their last three games.
The Western Mustangs are ninth in the conference, allowing 56.7 points per game, and they are seventh in the league with 29.5 points scored per game.
Western New Mexico is leading the conference with 11 fumbles recovered this season, and the Western Mustangs have a turnover ratio of minus-2.
Conner Ackerley is completing more than 64 percent of his passes for 2,931 yards and leads the LSC with 30 touchdown passes. The redshirt freshman from Tempe, Arizona, has thrown 12 interceptions. WNMU is fifth in the conference with 278 yards passing per game.
Ackerley is the leading rusher for WNMU with 322 yards on 115 carries and has rushed for four touchdowns.
Ackerly is responsible for 206 points, which leads the conference and is fourth in the nation among NCAA Division II players.
Davey Morales has caught a team-high 51 passes for 631 yards and six touchdowns. Anthony Flores has caught 49 passes for 544 yards and eight touchdowns. Deuce Zimmerman has 44 receptions for 676 yards and 10 touchdowns, but the junior from Anchorage, Alaska, has not played since a 41-20 loss at Western Oregon on Oct. 4.
Defensive back Bradly Harris leads the Western Mustangs with 69 tackles, and he has broken up three passes. Linebacker Cole Lalama has forced four fumbles and hurried the quarterback four times this season.
Midwestern State is seeking its fourth win in six all-time trips to Silver City.
