CANYON, Texas -- Midwestern State is on the road Tuesday night to face No. 14-ranked West Texas A&M at "The Box." First serve at WTAMU Fieldhouse is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Midwestern State (9-3, 3-1) split its two road matches over the weekend. Following a 3-1 victory over St. Edward's, the Mustangs lost a fifth set at St. Mary's 15-13 to end a six-match winning streak.
Two of the Mustangs three losses have been by two points in the fifth set.
Isabella Dickens had 13 kills, and MSU hit .230 as a team in its triumph at St. Edward's on Friday night.
Jaiden Wright had a team-leading six blocks, while
Giselle Cazares had 18 digs for the Mustangs.
Alayna Guerrero had 38 assists in the victory.
Arrianna Fields had a career-high 18 kills in an evenly contested match at St. Mary's. Midwestern State had 69 kills and hit .235, while the Rattlers had 68 kills and hit .246. The Mustangs had six more assists and 12 more digs, but St. Mary's had 11 blocks, and the Mustangs only had six in the loss to the Ratters.
Guerrero finished with 56 assists and 24 digs in the five-set match at St. Mary's on Saturday.
Midwestern State leads the LSC and is sixth in the nation among NCAA Division II programs with 18.98 digs per set.
Sadie Christiansen leads the Stangs with 3.62 digs per set and
Demi Stauffenberg is averaging 3.49 digs per set.
Guerrero leads the league with 10.33 assists per set, which is 12th-most in the nation, and the Mustangs as a team are second in the LSC and 17th in the country with 12.91 assists per set. Guerrero is also responsible for 3.11 digs per set.
Midwestern State is second in the conference with 13.71 kills per set, trailing only Lubbock Christian, which averages 13.8 kills per set.
The Mustangs have delivered 84 service aces this season, which is sixth most in the LSC, and
Trinity Vinzant is sixth in the league with 21 aces.
Vinzant is averaging 3.92 points per set, which is fifth-most in the LSC, and
Isabella Dickens is second on the team with 3.32 points per set.
Vinzant and Dickens also lead the Mustangs in kills. Vinzant is seventh in the conference with 3.92 kills per set, and Dickens is averaging 2.8 kills per set.
No. 14-ranked West Texas A&M (11-4, 3-1) has a three-match winning streak following a 3-1 victory over Texas Woman's at "The Box" on Saturday, extending their home winning streak to eight matches.
The Lady Buffs are first in the conference with a hitting percentage of .256, and they are second in the league with 2.6 blocks per set.
Taytum Slow is the conference leader and fifth in the nation with 82 blocks and 1.55 blocks per set. Slow has the second-best hitting percentage in the conference at .388. Currie Marusak is second in the conference with 198 kills and 3.74 kills per set. Marusak is 12th in the league with a .278 hitting percentage.
West Texas A&M has dominated the all-time series with Midwestern State, which earned its only win in the series eight years ago at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. The Lady Buffs are 42-1 all-time against MSU and won all 20 meetings in Canyon, but the Mustangs did snap streak of 23 consecutive sets lost to the Lady Buffs with a 25-21 third-set triumph last year. It was the first time MSU took a set at "The Box" since winning the third set in 2015. WT closed out the 3-1 victory last year by winning the fourth set, 25-20.
Midwestern State has a three-match homestand beginning on Friday when Oklahoma Christian visits for a 6 p.m. match. Cameron is at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m., and Southwestern Oklahoma State faces the Mustangs under the dome on Oct. 14 for the final non-conference match of the regular season.
