Mustangs look to regroup with a trip to TAMIU

LAREDO, Texas – Midwestern State hopes to rebound from its gut-wrenching loss to St. Edward's as it travels to Texas A&M International for a Saturday afternoon match with the Dustdevils. Kickoff at Dustdevil Soccer Field is at 1 p.m.

Christian Mezas left the Mustangs despondent after scoring the game-winning goal for St. Edward's with six seconds remaining in their match at Stang Park on Wednesday night as the Hilltoppers prevailed, 2-1.

Midwestern State (4-2-3, 0-1-0) got off to a strong start when Cooper Tea scored in the 10th minute, but the Mustangs conceded two goals in the second half and were outshot by St. Edward's 15-5 over the final 45 minutes. 

Parker Plaxco is the leading goal scorer for MSU with six goals, and he has two assists for a team-leading 14 points.

Tea and Jaime Villagomez have each scored twice and have an assist for the Mustangs. Davis Mays and Liam Pritchard each have a goal and two assists. 

Midwestern State has outscored its opponents 15-11 this season and is outshooting the opposition this season, 117-100. The Mustangs are ninth in the nation with seven corner kicks per match and have 35 more corner kicks than their opponents this season.

Goalkeeper Jake Morris is 2-1-2 in his five starts with a .667 save percentage and a 1.2 goals-against average.

Danny Robles started four matches for the Mustangs and is 2-1-1 with a 1.25 goals-against average and a save percentage of .737.

Midwestern State is 0-0-2 in away matches this season but leads the all-time series with TAMIU 20-1-4. MSU has won its last two meetings with the Dustdevils, including a 5-2 victory at Stang Park last season. The Mustangs won their last visit to Dustdevil Soccer Field, 6-3, and are 8-0-1 as the visiting team in the series.

Texas A&M International (2-1-5, 0-0-1) was unbeaten in its first six matches but suffered a 6-1 loss to UT Rio Grande Valley in its final non-conference match and fell to 2-1-2 at home this season.

The Dustdevils opened conference play with a 0-0 draw at West Texas A&M on Wednesday night.

Texas A&M International is outscoring its opponents this season, 16-13, and is outshooting the opposition, 97-63. The Dustdevils have taken 38 more corner kicks than their opponents.

Emmanuel Esquivel made four saves to preserve the clean sheet for TAMIU. Esquivel has allowed four goals in four appearances and has a goals-against average of 1.28 with a save percentage of .667.

The Dustdevils have used three goalkeepers this season, including a Ioannis Koupepides, who has the most minutes played among the three goalkeepers.  Koupepides is 0-1-3 with GAA of 2.00 and a .462 save percentage. 

Tiziano Klamler leads the Dustdevils with nine points from two goals and five assists. The leading goal scorers for TAMIU are Chris Fuentes and Kai Louviere with three goals apiece. 

Midwestern State hosts UT Tyler on Wednesday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Stang Park.
