PORTALES, New Mexico – Midwestern State closed out the first set winning 21 of the final 24 points, setting the tone for a sweep of Eastern New Mexico at Greyhound Arena on Tuesday night, 25-8, 25-14, 25-21.
Midwestern State (14-7, 7-5) snapped a three-match losing streak by hitting .345 and holding Eastern New Mexico (4-17, 1-9) to an attack percentage of .050.
The Mustangs handed the Greyhounds their fifth consecutive loss.
Arrianna Fields,
Trinity Vinzant and
Isabella Dickens combined for 52 swings without an attack error and combined for 27 of the Mustangs' 37 kills in the match.
Vinznant hit .529 with nine kills on 17 attacks, and Dickens hit .615 with eight kills on 13 swings. Fields was 10-for-22 and hit .455.
Jaiden Wright was in on three of six blocks for the Mustangs, who had 43 digs in the match.
Demi Staffenburg, who had seven kills and two aces, led the team with 10 digs.
Midwestern State had nine aces in the victory, including five in the first set. Vinzant,
Aissa Villarreal and
Giselle Cazares all had two aces for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs finished 2-3 on a five-game road trip and return home for a Halloween showdown with Dallas Baptist at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
