Mustangs venture south to face Javelinas and Dustdevils

KINGSVILLE, Texas –  Midwestern State continues a five-match road trip with games at Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday night at 6 p.m. and Texas A&M International on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.

Midwestern State (13-5, 6-3) had a four-match winning streak snapped with a 3-2 loss at UT Tyler last Saturday. The Mustangs are now 3-3 in five-set matches, including a 3-2 victory over UT Dallas last Friday night to begin the five-match road trip.

The Mustangs are 4-4 on the road this season with a 2-3 record as the visiting team in Lone Star Conference matches.

Midwestern State leads the conference and is seventh among NCAA Division II programs with 19.1 digs per set. MSU enters the weekend with 1,337 total digs in its 70 sets played this season. 

Demi Stauffenberg is the team leader in digs with 238 total digs and 3.4 digs per set.

Alayna Guerrero, Jenna Redding and Trinity Vinzant all have 200 or more digs this season. 

Guerrero is leading the conference and is 15th in the nation with 10.5 assists per set. Guerrero has a career-high 745 total assists this season, and she has 1,843 assists in her career at MSU.

Trinity Vinzant leads the team with 736 attacks, and she leads the team with 3.2 kills per set, which is 10th in the conference. The senior from Decatur, Texas, is seventh in the league with 3.8 points per set. She is second in the LSC with 31 aces.

Jaiden Wright is ninth in the conference with a hitting percentage of .301, and Isabella Dickens is 10th with a hitting percentage of .295.

Midwestern State is sixth in the league with a hitting percentage of .224, while its opponents are hitting .167.

Dickens is second on the team with 3.3 points per set, and she is tied with Wright for the team lead with 44 total blocks this season. Arrianna Fields and Vinzant each have 21 blocks for the Mustangs, who average 1.5 blocks per set.

The Mustangs played both Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas A&M International in the LSC Challenge last month and won both matches. MSU wiped up the Dustdevils in straight sets and engineered a reverse sweep against the Javelinas at Steinke Center in Kingsville.

TEXAS A&M-KINGSVILLE (13-6, 5-4)

The Javelinas have lost four of their last five matches, including a five-set loss at Cameron last week, and TAMUK was swept by Oklahoma Christian the night before facing the Aggies.

Texas A&M-Kingsville is 8-2 at home this season with a loss to MSU, and it suffered a 3-1 loss against St. Edward's earlier this month.

The Javelinas have won 14 of their last 16 meetings with the Mustangs and lead the all-time series, 28-13.

Last season at D.L. Ligon Coliseum, TAMUK defeated the Mustangs, 3-1. Ayanna Jackson had 19 kills, five blocks and hit an astounding .621 with only one attack error on 29 swings. 

In their non-conference clash earlier this season, Dickens had 16 kills and two blocks for the Mustangs, who earned their first win at Kingsville since 2013. MSU snapped a seven-match losing streak at the Steinke Center.

Texas A&M-Kingsville is third in the LSC with a .230 hitting percentage, and 13.3 kills per set. 

Ryan Pollard leads the Javelinas with 3.0 kills per set and 3.5 points per set. 

Elisa Carli and Pollard lead the team in assists. Carli is 11th in the league with 5.4 assists per set, and Pollard is 17th in the conference with 4.9 assists per set. TAMUK is fifth in the LSC with 12.3 assists per set.

Carli leads the team with 29 service aces, and the Javelinas are second in the conference with 138 total aces and 1.9 aces per set.
Opponents are hitting .163 against TAMUK this season.

Monique Gonzalez leads the Javelinas with 3.2 digs per set, and the team averages a little more than 15 digs per set. 

Natalee Rush leads the team with 43 total blocks, and TAMUK is averaging 1.5 blocks per set.

TEXAS A&M INTERNATIONAL (3-15, 1-8)

Texas A&M International is hosting Lubbock Christian before the Mustangs visit TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building on Saturday afternoon.

The Dustdevils have a five-match losing streak and are 0-4 at home this season.

The only conference victory for TAMIU came at Sul Ross State on Oct. 4.

Texas A&M International is only hitting .127 as a team this season, while its opponents are hitting .236.

Sierra Long and Aryana Ledet lead the offense for the Dustdevils. Long has 133 points and 2.0 kills per set, which Ledet has 132.5 points and is also averaging two kills per set.

Samantha Estrada averages 3.8 digs per set, while Caitlyn Cornell and Danea King each have 33 blocks for the Dustdevils, who average 1.3 blocks per set.

Midwestern State has won its last two meetings with TAMIU and leads the all-time series, 8-5. 

In the sweep at the LSC Challenge in Kingsville last month, Midwestern State hit .310 as a team, led by Fields .429 with a team-leading 13 kills and just one error on 28 swings. Vinzant had a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs.

Midwestern State had 65 digs in the sweep, led by Stauffenberg's 15. Guerrero finished the match with 36 assists and 14 digs. 

In the conference matchup at MSU last year, Dickens had 14 kills and four blocks as the Mustangs hit .286, and the Dustdevils hit .087 in defeat.

Midwestern State closes out its five-match road trip as it visits Eastern New Mexico on Tuesday night. First serve at Greyhound Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m. CDT.
