AUSTIN, Texas – Midwestern State takes a five-match winning streak on the road to face St. Edward's and St. Mary's this weekend. The Mustangs are coming off victories in their first two conference matches at D.L. Ligon Coliseum last week. MSU and St. Edward's clash at the Recreation and Convocation Center on Friday night at 6 p.m.
The Mustangs have opened the season with an 8-2 record, and they are 2-1 in true road matches this season.
Alayna Guerrero was named the Lone Star Conference Setter of the Week for the second time this season after posting 28 assists and 14 digs against Western New Mexico. She followed that up with 37 assists and six kills in a win over Sul Ross State. In the two victories, Guerrero led the way as the Mustangs hit .302, and she finished with seven kills, two blocks and a service ace.
Guerrero is leading the LSC with 10.83 assists per set, and the Mustangs are fourth in the league with a .233 hitting percentage. MSU is third in the conference with 12.81 assists per set, and is second among LSC schools with 17.28 points per set.
The Mustangs lead the conference and are seventh in the nation among NCAA Division II programs with 18.97 digs per set, and opponents are only hitting .153 against Midwestern State, which is the third-best opponent hitting percentage in the LSC.
Sadie Christiansen and
Demi Stauffenberg lead Midwestern State in digs. Christiansen is averaging 4.43 digs per set, and Stauffenberg averages 3.67 digs per set.
Jaiden Wright had eight kills and hit .571 without an error in the win over Western New Mexico last week, and the junior from Alvarado, Texas, is fifth in the league with a .360 hitting percentage for the season.
Trinity Vinzant is fifth in the conference and leads the Mustangs with 3.42 assists per set, and the senior from Decatur, Texas, is third in the LSC with 4.04 points per set. Vinzant averages 10.44 attacks per set, which is second-most in the LSC. She is also fifth in the league with 0.53 service aces per set.
St. Edward's
Midwestern State has won three of its last four and five of the last seven meetings with the Hilltoppers, including a 3-0 win at home last season. The Mustangs fell to St. Edwards 3-0 in their last visit, 25-17, 25-23, 25-19. The Hilltoppers lead the all-time series 12-8.
St. Edward's (3-5, 0-3) has a three-match losing streak but is 2-1 at home this season. The Hilltoppers are coming off a 3-2 loss at UT Tyler on Tuesday as the Patriots won the fifth set, 15-13.
Kelli Fording led St. Edward's with 20 kills on 63 swings and hit .206 in the loss as the Hilltoppers hit .236 as a team at UT Tyler. For the season, St. Edward's is hitting .187 and Bradley is hitting .266 over 32 sets.
Althea Morris is third in the conference with nine assists per set, and Fording leads the league with 0.74 aces per set.
St. Mary's
St. Mary's hosts Lubbock Christian on Friday night before the Mustangs visit Bill Greehey Arena on Saturday afternoon for a 2 p.m. match.
The Rattlers improved to 5-8 overall and 2-1 in the LSC with a 3-1 victory over UT Dallas on Tuesday.
Senior Landri Withers recorded her 1,000th career kill and set a school record with 24 kills in four-match set. Withers became the first Rattler since Samantha Weber in 2007 to record 20 or more kills in back-to-back matches, as she had 23 on Saturday in a four-set win at UT Permian Basin.
Withers is sixth in the conference with 3.40 kills per set, and Laurene Robinson leads St. Mary's with a .279 hitting percentage.
Haleigh Wilk is fourth in the league with 0.55 aces per set.
Dallasstar Johnson has been in on 51 blocks for the Rattlers, which is fifth in the LSC, and Alyssa Koehl leads the conference with 5.58 digs per set.
The Rattlers snapped a five-match losing streak in its all-time series with Midwestern State by defeating the Mustangs at D.L. Ligon Coliseum last season, 25-14, 25-19, 25-23.
Midwestern State leads the all-time series with St. Mary's 11-9, and the Mustangs are 2-3 when visiting the Rattlers.
