WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Bruno Sanchez,
Germano Setti,
Juan David Duque and
Jose Marquez reached the round of 16 at the ITA DII Men's South Central Regional Championships on Thursday at MSU Tennis Center and Hamilton Park Tennis Center.
Sanchez, the No. 5 seed, dispatched Trevor Short of UT Tyler in the first round, 6-3, 6-0, before winning an extended battle with Gian Rojas Rodriguez of Lubbock Christian, 6-3, 3-6, 10-4.
The tall right-hander from Spain meets Malo Poulesquen of UT Tyler in the third round on Friday morning.
Jose Marquez, a senior from Mexico, reached the second round after defeating Santiago Ledesma of Cameron 6-4, 6-3, and he upset the No. 13-seed Jordi Garcia of UT Tyler, 6-3, 6-2.
Marquez faces the No. 7 seed, Mattia Ghedin of Lubbock Christian, in the round of 16 on Friday.
Setti, the No. 9 seed, coasted past two opponents. The senior from Brazil advanced with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Job Japelj of UT Tyler in the first round, and he eliminated Pavel Kelo of Cameron in the second round, 6-1, 6-3.
Setti battles No. 4-seed Artiom Dorofeev of UT Tyler in a marquee third-round matchup on Friday morning.
Juan David Duque dismissed Edward Shteyn of UT Dallas in the opening round, and the No. 12 seed rallied past Jordan Georgiev in the second round, 5-7, 7-5, 10-5.
Duque plays Marco Seccia of Lubbock Christian in the third round on Friday. Seccia upset the No. 8 seed Daniil Felker of UT Tyler in the second round, 6-4, 6-1.
Duque and Sanchez won a pair of doubles matches on Thursday. The No. 7-seed wiped out the Western New Mexico pairing of Mael Houee and Yannik Rogulski in the first round, 8-3, and then defeated Lucas Castillo-Sanchez and Lincoln Badonado of St. Mary's, 8-3, to reach the quarterfinals.
On Friday afternoon, Duque and Sanchez will square off against the third-seeded pairing of Mattia Ghedin and Seccia of Lubbock Christian.
Setti and
Matthew Earle, the No. 4-seed, easily advanced with an 8-1 victory over Philipp Gaurieder and Enrique Silveira of UT Permian Basin in the first round. Setti and Earle handled Short and Japelj of UT Tyler in the second round, 8-3.
Friday afternoon, Setti and Earle tangle with Kelly Giese and Pablo Segura, the fifth-seeded duo from Lubbock Christian.
No. 16-seed Lukas Janousek of Cameron rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 win over
Jack Franklin in the first round.
Lukas Holub, also from Cameron, edged
Rowan Olsen in the opening round, 6-4, 6-4.
Matthew Earle's rally against Nehal Naidoo of UT Permian Basin fell short in the first round, and Naidoo advanced with a 6-1, 7-6 (1) victory.
Jose Castillo of UT Dallas defeated
Caden Coker in the first round, 6-3, 6-0, and
Tomas Leguizamon was eliminated by the No. 6-sed Noe Milliard of Cameron in the opening round, 6-4, 6-3.
Leguizamon and Marquez fell in the first round of doubles, 8-1, as Castillo and Benjamin DuBois of UT Dallas advanced to the second round.
Olsen and Franklin drew the fifth-seeded pairing of Giese and Segura in the first round and lost to the Lubbock Christian duo, 8-4.
The tournament continues at the two sites tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. Round of 16 and quarterfinal singles matches will be played at MSU Tennis Center, starting at 8 a.m. Quarterfinal matches in doubles commence at 3 p.m. Consolation matches will be staged at Hamilton Park on Friday morning.
