ROME, Georgia – Germano Setti rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Tadeo Gaggiofatto of UIndy in the opening round of the 2025 ITA Cup at Rome Tennis Center on Thursday afternoon.
Setti will now face the No. 3-seed Pedro Liborio of North Georgia in the quarterfinals on Friday morning at 10 a.m. CDT.
Setti received an at-large bid into the singles draw after reaching the quarterfinals of the South Central Regional, including a 6-1, 7-6 (7) win over No. 4-seed Artiom Dorofeev of UT Tyler in the round of 16.
Liborio survived a three-set battle with Pablo Segura of Lubbock Christian in the first round, prevailing 4-6, 6-1, 7-5. Segura was also a quarterfinalist in the South Central Regional.
Bruno Sanchez and
Juan David Duque won the South Central Regional doubles title to earn an automatic berth in the ITA Cup. The MSU duo was defeated on Thursday, 6-2, 6-4 by Adrian Solorzano and Cian Mikklesen of Harding, 6-2, 6-4.
Setti played doubles alongside
Matthew Earle, who lifted the trophy at the 2024 ITA Cup while at Washburn with his partner Tim Hammes.
Setti and Earle took the first set from Benedek Szombathelyi and Daniel Hammond of Columbus State, 6-3, but dropped the second set 7-5, sending the contest to a match tiebreak. The Columbus State duo narrowly escaped with a 12-10 victory and advanced to the quarterfinals.
Sanchez and Duque will meet Nagamitsu Kuroda and Don Vinz Lominique of St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday afternoon, while Setti and Earle will square off against Omar Elsamahy and Vicente Garcia of Charleston (W Va.). The doubles matches are scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. CDT.
